Eatting Filipino "Balut"

So today I went to a Filipino picnic with my GF's family. Like most others there was tons of people and tons of food. Just a monstrosity of food which was cool.

However Pia's father called me over and said "Steve have some Balut"

Me being the brave type I thought ok no problem I can eat Duck Egg.

Just before i cracked the egg I was told by someone to not look at it while I ate it. I can assure you it was the most disturbing thing I have ever ate in my life to date.. LOL

When i cracked it open - I was told to drink the juice first which was pretty tasty - but then as i peeled it more I realized what I was actually eating and I can tell you it was really hard to finish it.




Even Pia could not watch me eat it as she was grossed out.. LOL




LOL - I still feel traumatized by what i ate.

Hahaha.. my ex was filipino, and she kept egging me on to eat Balut. I was never game to.

But what she did trick me to eat was dinuguan. It looked like chocolate pudding - so I was given a huge helping. Its actually pork blood stew.

Dinuguan -Oh yeah i ate that today as well. Pia forced me to eat it. But i have eating it before at Xmas party of hers as i recall. But yeah at first its also difficult to eat since its mostly blood - LOL

They had a huge ass pot of that today there and i ate like a spoonful only. I could not stomach anymore

I ate it with this sponge bread - you dip it in the blood and eat it. The rest is like pork liver.

LOL - my favorite is still "Bangus" and washing it down with "Halo Halo"

LOL of course not. I usually pick up some Bangus at this filipino store close to where Pia lives - the ladies there always talk to me about stuff in their country and teach me stuff.. haha - so i get a few Bangus and tomatoes... come home and share it with the cats.. LOL

Then i drive over to this place close to where i live and get some halo halo - they use coranation milk and some fruits.. Really good!!

Haha or sometimes I will settle for the simple green tea ice cream or Even UBE ice cream...

Green tea ice cream is very nice. Its my favorite after sushi.
Where I live, there is a great mix of Cantonese, Vietnamese, Singaporean, Hong Kong, Malaysian, Japanese, Indian, Korean, Szechuan foods.

If you're eating fast food where I live, then you shouldn't be living here hahaa.
Never had ube ice cream, but I usually have it in a bun or something from the asian bakeries ehehe.

Yeah when we go out for Japanese all the time they love green tea ice cream. Also nice is a mango one. I do not like sushi so i always get the cooked foods like battered shrimp, mushroom, pork dishes and sometimes soups.. I tried sushi but i just do not like the texture.

Ube on a bun... LOL Pia likes that sort of thing - kinda dry though.

I rarely eat fast foods since there are just so many good restaurants where i live - especially some wicked bad ass Jamaican ones!!

Some really good Guyanese roti shops as well....

LOL i even eat Ethopian and Eritrean ones - ever get a chance eat some "Tsebhi" or "Tibs" with some good injera

You are a man after my own heart. well stomach. hahaha.. I love good food. I have some West Indian relatives.. and they known how to cook up a storm. Although I wouldnt mind trying some of their street food - that looks sensational.

Like my mum used to say to me "there is so much nice food in the world, why would you eat that rubbish"

OMG! A friend told me about this a month ago, and when I seen the pictures it almost put me off eggs for life! He assured me it's tasty...I think i'll just have to take his word for it!

I don't think I could face that at all, you are brave! Not sure about the pork blood stew - I like black pudding a lot which is basically a sausage of congealed pork blood and minced offal, so I might be able to cope with the stew if it tastes similar I guess.

Steve, I've got to hand it to you man You've got balls! Sure, could not have been easy to eat that but mostly to keep it in.

On the other hand the blood stew does not gross me out as much - although I wouln't touch it with your lips. It is a tradition in Mauritius to have that dish in Indian/Tamil weddings. Except the blood is taken from billy-goats. It does look very similar to a liver dish indeed.

LOL trust me - it grossed me out as well.

The problem was I had all these people watching me - and it would of been disrespectful of me not to finish it.. LOL - since it would not hurt me I felt like i had to eat it.

If i had to do it all over again - i do not think i could do it.

I am better today though LOL - but yeah if you eat it or try it just be sure not to pick at it - put the whole thing in your mouth and just swallow..LOL

It does taste good though and apparently is an aphrodisiac.

I am not sure about that one - did nothing for me!! LMAO

My ex tried to eat it.. you're supposed to take it all down.

She took it into her mouth, but she tried to swallow, and she couldnt swallow.. so she was freaking out, and trying to chew swallow, but was getting grossed out.. eventualy.. she chucked everywhere while flapping her arms around.

She said it was "softly crunch" and you could "feel everything"... I'm sure she was trying to make me gag and puke.. because I did.

yeah its a little crunchy - almost like eating cartilage. The top part is really hard and the yolk is like regular egg. But the fertilized duck embryo you can feel all the veins and small bones in your mouth and something similar to feathers - a soft tickle hits your throat.
