Default eCOGRA study profiles the online gambling demographic

Some interesting facts are found in this study, which was commissioned by eCOGRA and conducted by a research team at Nottingham Trent University. eCOGRA calls it "the first comprehensive picture of the 'average' online gambler", as well as "the largest study to date into player behavior and attitudes to the industry."

A sample size of 10,865 people from 96 countries and 37 employment sectors was used. Most of the data was obtained through online surveys consisting of 85 questions. "Individuals who had gambled at Internet casinos, INternet poker sites or both within the last three months were targeted for the survey. Internet gamblers outside of these two categories (e.b. sports betting; lottery, etc.) were not included in the sample range."

    Some of the claims:

74 percent of online poker players are male and 27 percent are aged 26-35.

55 percent of online casino players are female and 30 percent are aged 46-55.

27 percent of online poker players play 2-3 times per week, 25 percent have visited more than 6 poker sites in the last 3 months, and 24 percent play at one table at a time while another 24 percent play at two at a time. 23 percent play with 6-10 percent of their bankroll at any one time.

37 percent of online casino players play 2-3 times a week and 25 percent have visited more than 6 casinos in the last 3 months.

The researchers also report "A series of factors were identified which had a significant influence on the money that Internet poker players reported winning and losing each month." Players who do well:

-are more likely to play at multiple sites
-likely listen to music when playing
-play more tables at the same time
-play with a smaller percentage of their bankroll
-play to win money (as opposed to for relaxation or for fun)
    -play frequently

Overall, it's an interesting study about online gamblers that might reveal a few things to you about your target demographic.
