Facebook itself has said its flagship app dilutes the messaging experience
I agree with this, if the user is on an iphone. On an iphone, the chat/messages pops up a new dialogue thing every time you want to read the messages and it sits down about a quarter of the screen away from the top, so when you're typing, you can't see any of the message that you're replying to. This doesn't happen on android (on htc one at least) and so it doesn't dilute it at all.

I was under the impression that the private messages and chat were 2 totally different things, which is why I turn the chat off permanently. I don't want to chat to people. That's what skype is for. And I don't want every tom, dick and harry to know that I'm on facebook at that very moment because I'm logged into chat. I definitely don't want to know when a person messages me every time I receive it. That's why I turn off push notifications on facebook. If it is important they will text me or email me.

I personally think they are doing this because there are some access rights in the messenger app that access stuff you wouldn't normally need access to in that kind of app (which is why I deleted that app in the first place) and they want to force people to give them that access..
