Is Alexa the most useless tool of all time ? It reports that 42% of my traffic is from Greece, while the real truth is about 2.5%!! With all due respect, why do they bother?

I don't know why i look at it --- i need to ban the site from y browser!

Someone from Greece who visits your site from time to time has the Alexa chrome extension installed, the vast majority of your other visitors don't would be my guess

Yes.

They measure traffic from people who have the toolbar installed. So chances are that your 2.5% of traffic from Greece is 42% of your traffic who have the toolbar installed.

So to answer your question, completely useless.

Yep we ran a test here years ago and proved how easy it was to manipulate their numbers...

It's a meaningless metric. It only considers traffic from users that have the toolbar installed.

Hence why sites like web directories/webmaster forums will rank better, because that particular demographic is more likely to have the Alexa toolbar.

Alexa lost any relevance about 10 years ago - not worth looking at.

It was always pretty meaningless.

The only time you see Alexa being quoted now is when someone is trying to sell a site and they very fact it's in there as a sales pitch tells me the numbers will look better than they really are. Stay well clear of anyone spouting Alexa rankings.

Back in the days of dial up, it was installed usually as a sidebar on ye old internet explorer or netscape browser, back in a time when you could rank a website by adding 600 white coloured link at the bottom of your web page.. those were the days.. it was a useful tool then

Webmaster Tools, or Analytics everything else is based on theory mostly outdated.. I personally think rankbrain will kill most of these off though like pagerank the old schoolers will continue to spout about these 3rd party numbers
