Expanding menu in wordpress

Quick wordpress question - using the core functionality, is it possible to create a hierarchical menu where child items are only visible on the relevant parent page?

In joomla and you can just assign levels and specify how many levels you want to show at any one time. I just want to replicate this in wordpress.

I'm not after anything fancy - no crazy sliding effects etc.. just a simple multiple tier menu that only shows the sub-menu items on the relevant pages.

Eg: Lets say you have the following menu

Slots (Tier 1)
-- Slot 1 (Tier 2)
-- Slot 2 (Tier 2)
-- Slot 3 (Tier 2)

'Slots' is a main menu item which should be shown all the time, but the actual slots shouldn't appear in the menu unless it's on the 'Slots' parent page or any of the 'Slot #' sub pages.

Make sense? Is it possible to do it out of the box, or do I need an over the top plug in?

That is a good question @bald. I would like to know more about using menus differently in wordpress. Not exactly how you described but using a layout for the home page and in different categories having different menus. Do you know a plugin that allows that or how to do that manually?

This is more tied in to the template you are using.

I haven't played with them a lot, but looking at some of the options in Artistseer, I see that you can easily make menus that support a second tier.

Thank you @universal. I used wordpress templates that I found from someone on here for my new sites. They are really good and there is a big variety. I am trying to built it where if someone clicks on a sportsbook review they will get a different menu than if they click on news. It is more complicated than I thought. I am going to google Artistseer.

Artistseer is a template builder, its a stand alone application you can use to build templates for html, wp, joomla and drupal...

You could also maybe try Suffusion (free) which is a template that is very customizable once its up....

I'm sure a few others can recommend a few more to look at.

Thank you, that looks good. I want to make sure I don't get myself into a big project, Im not an experienced coder. I think wordpress is the safe bet for me now.
