I see you are arguing about the english teams but take a look on the chinese league. They've been throwing their money (overpaying is not enough to describe the situation) like peanuts. I mean 40 million Euros/year for a striker like Graziano Pelle? It is after government's urge to improve their domestic leagues (search for all new stadium built or being built right now) and advertise their country. It could also server as a distraction. Anyway, what happens in the east is crazy.
It kind of reminds me of Russia, when president Puttin demanded for wealthy gas/oil company owners to spend money in order to improve their domestic football and basketball teams.

The amount of Money spent on English Premier League Players and TV rights Dwarf to the amount some US American Football & BasketBall teams and players are worth and this shows now when the richest sports teams were named it was a NFL team .. Its ridiculous ..but att he end of the day TV TV TV this is what pays it all as there is a need and they fill it

Let's not forget that in the US there are only 30 teams in a market of 320 million people (plus international fans) and they don't allow two franchises in the same territory (unless it's a giant + rich one such as NY). You can't get relegated if you finish last either.

All these things ensure a steady cash flow. A perfect closed system which was designed to produce large revenues.

Your so right, we may have a bucket load of cash in the bank. But he will not spend it on a mediocre player at best. Been a bit quiet since he got Xhaka. Mad dash come the end of August

It feels all too familiar doesn't it? The business should have been done at the start of the summer, but here we are again.

Not counting my chickens but I think Mahrez would be a great signing. World class strikers are thin on the ground, maybe someone like Lacazette is as good as we can hope for, if we stump up the cash!!

I see big Mert could be out for a while, good job we bought that 20 year old from Bolton!

Yep, thought it was going to be different when he bought early but once again he tricked me.

Reverting back to buying kids on the cheap, but am intrigued to see how he gets on. Mahrez obviously would be a good buy as long he does not have the bounce factor after a good season. Price seems reasonable too!!!

Xhaka looks like a decent signing, brings some much needed bite to the midfield, and he can play.

Just one or two more quality signings and I'll be reasonably optimistic. Injury permitting of course!!

Arsenal is so needed in signing the good striker like Lacazette or even Benzema. Alexis playing on wings, Welbeck ( are you kidding me), Giroud can't play all season in high level.

Arsenal desperately need a top striker but it's the same old question, who do they sign?

Who is (a) available (b) willing and (c) good enough to break the bank for?

Juventus also really needed a top striker, and they got one in Higuan, but 90mill for a 29 year old is madness. That's how crazy the market is at the minute.

Lacazette is probably the best we can hope for, and if we can sign Mahrez as well I think that will amount to some decent business. A well rested and fit again Sanchez on one flank, Mahrez on the other, Ozil playing in behind Lacazette, that would do me nicely!

Higuain transfer is the worst transfer of this summer. He is good scorer, but he has 28 years and contract for 4 years is too long. Because for 4 years Juventus for him will not be able to gain more than 10 million. 5 years before for 94 millions you can get C.Ronaldo and this is big difference between these players.

Regarding earlier posts about shirt sales, Man United already made 90 million on Zlatan Ibrahimović shirts. In the first week.

So it's safe to say top players don't cost these clubs anything.

Shirt sales may well have reached 90mill in the first week, but it's adidas who will pocket any profit from that.

Adidas design the shirts, manufacture them, market them, distribute them, AND they pay man united a licensing fee of 750million pounds sterling over 10 years, for the privilege to do so. It's only fair that they get to keep the lions share of the shirt sales, don't you think?

The only incremental increase man united will see is when the shirt sales go over a certain amount (millions of units sold) and even then they only get a small percentage. I'm guessing with an up front licensing fee of 750mill this small percentage doesn't kick until a pretty high number of shirts are sold.

So no, it's not safe to say top players don't cost these clubs anything. They very much do.

Let's assume Adidas gets the lions share.

Still, ManU did get 75m yearly for the favor and they're expected to keep signing such high profile players. Then they'll sign another, richer deal with Adidas, based on Adidas making a bucket load of cash on Zlatan in 2016-17.

What I wanted to point out is that Man United have such a large international fan base and so many sponsorship deals already in place that they have the power to relatively quickly recoup the money paid for the player. And that's even before he pays himself with goals and in Champions League prize money / BPL prize money / TV rights.

So 100m for Pogba doesn't sound like 100m anymore. They'll end up making a profit - hence Pogba won't cost them anything in the end. You can't argue with that.

So does your quick guide to footballing finance take account of player salaries? Are they not a cost too?

Pogba’s upfront cost of 100mill is one thing, but he is reportedly earning 210K NET per week, which works out at approx 450K gross….pounds sterling….per week. Add in performance related bonuses, image rights (do you think his agent will let ManU make all that money off his back??)…etc and he could easily be costing united half a million.…. pounds….. PER WEEK.

That’s a cost, a very real cost, and it’s on top of the 100mill transfer fee.

As for the 75mill per year from adidas, there is no expectation or obligation for united to sign anyone. The deal was even signed when united couldn’t offer any champions league football, and they will continue to get this 75mill per year no matter who they sign, and no matter how much or how little they win.

Of course I get the point that you are trying to make - spend money = good players = goals and wins = cups and titles = more money. I get it. What I don’t get is you started on this thread criticising English clubs for overpaying for players, and now you say they’re buying guys who actually don’t cost them any money.

Player salaries are taken into account.

By the way, Man United are taking part in manufacturing costs but after a set figure is reached 100% of profits goes to ManU. They're making money from Zlatan shirts:
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/foo...ike-ended.html

If you don't think part of the negotiation with Adidas was "expectation or obligation" they'll sign several top players in this transfer window, and every transfer window in these 10 years, then you don't know how the world works.

Isn't it interesting how ManU will break the record transfer fee now after signing a shirt deal with Adidas? Is it a coincidence?

I'm criticizing English clubs for their transfer policy from a football perspective. From the business perspective - it's brilliant. Especially this thing ManU are doing.
