Gambling Act Public Consultation

This in particular took my eye on first read yesterday...

"any customer with a net loss of £1,000 over a rolling 24-hour period or £2,000 over 90 days could be forced to undergo an enhanced check into their finances as often as twice a year"

Then...

"For the purposes of calculating a net loss, the Gambling Commission also proposes to ignore any money won more than seven days ago for those at the £1,000 threshold and 90 days ago at the £2,000 threshold. This would mean that anyone betting with the proceeds of a big win could still be forced to prove they could afford their gambling, despite being comfortably in profit."

My interpretation is that punters playing off winnings and not even making deposits can still be subject to intrusive checks. That's painful. You could argue there are several nuances that could be at play, but still that seems wrong on a number of levels.

It also means the bookies have to be reporting winners who are giving winnings back, who then have checks imposed designed to stop them losing back more, which I suspect they'll (the books) be slightly less than happy about.

All sorts of problems coming with all this stuff if it gets implemented.

For sure, this shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how gambling works, even for a breakeven/profitable punter there will be peaks and troughs.

Add to this the fact that you could win with bookie A and lose to bookie B, but still be net breakeven or in profit overall, then to make this work effectively it must rely on an effective single customer view. The chances of that launching in tandem with the proposals above are pretty slim.

It seems that they will mess things up whatever they do. Like with other things like this in the past each operator will make their own interpretations of any new rules, which will make life hell for us.
