    Default Getting ready for Hurricane

Anyone else in the path of this storm?
I am excited and worried at the same time....but i can't wait to stand in front of my window and get 'blown'....lollllllllllllll

seriously...if you have pets, please make sure they are inside and safe....even the strays that may live in your area..i plan i bringing in all the strays i feed outside into my basement until the storm passes with food and water...[would bring them in the house, but my 8 cats would have a problem with that...[i did have nine cats until last week when i woke up and found 'Oreo' laying on my kitchen floor passed away...he was 10 years old and was not sick at all....was a horrible shock and very very sad.....looks like he had a heart attack.]

please take care of the wildlife if this Hurricane comes through your area.

Ouch about the hurricane. Yes Pat go out and get all the cats you can - haha your like me - I would be out collecting as many as i can. LOL if we were together with 30 or so cats..

Sorry about your OREO that is sad, but I do not think cats have heart attacks maybe it was congestive heart failure - that can happen suddenly but its not painful at all. Still very sad to hear your kitty passed.

Preparing for hurricanes is something I have to think about every year so it is something I am quite familiar with...

In fact Irene has already cost me a days work redistributing power to servers so that I could take the most efficient use of my UPS's in the rack, and in the event of a long term power emergency in the NOC I could make fast decisions on what ups could be shut down to save power etc....

Luckily Irene decided to pass us by yesterday and is now bearing down on on the Northeast. In fact a buddy of mine that lives on Merrit Island and I were talking on the phone last night and we couldn't help but laugh a little at how much MIS-information the media in the north were providing since I musta had a dozen calls yesterday from friends and family asking if I was ok since they had seen on the tv that Floriday was being hammered with a storm that barely even gave us any rain yesterday. The hurricane and potential damage is no joke, but you also have to understand that these storms to us are very much like dealing with earthquakes on the west coast are....by the time the rest of the country hears about it, we are often past the bad parts....

From all the models I have seen on the various weather channels it appears that it will hit land as a category 1 or possibly low end category 2.

A category 2 is nothing to dismiss, although those in the area should feel better that it will hopefully slow down by the time it hits land. (let's hope the models are correct) (remember this thing passed us as a category 3)

Those that have gas grills, go get a tank of gas now since if there is power issues, you will NOT be able to get it after the storm hits.
Get a few cases of water just in case.
The day the storm is hitting, fill the bath tubs with water... (that water can be used to flush toilets or whatever if needed)
Canned foods, expecially pre-cooked stuff or food that could be eaten without cooking if needed.
Top off the gas tanks of ALL vehicles. After Charlie hit us here a few years ago, even the local police could not control the lines and unrest at gas stations for DAYS!!!

There are a number of obvious things such as candles, flashlights, batteries, battery radios and more than many think about, but if you haven't gotten them yet, they will be hard to find after this afternoon. I have already talked to family and friends in PA, NY, MD and NJ and the stores are swamped with people looking for the above items and many shelves are empty in some places.

Y'all be careful and stay safe, and hope that the eastward swing of this storm continues as it heads north getting further away from the US....and also keep some good thoughts for us down here since there are a few more storms brewing out there that we will have to deal with next week.

    Great post Rick.

One of the things I learned from my experience with Ike in 2008, is you can never have enough water.

Here is a list of items from Ready.gov that is a good guide to get your kit started.

Good link Anthony, remember you will never buy as much water as the bath tub can hold...the average tub holds between 30-50 gallons.

Now if you have a live spring on your property (such as my parents do) water will not be a problem. Those with a well, keep in mind that if the electric is gone the pumps will not run so you will have water as long as the pressure lasts.

    What's the latest news?
Here in Sweden we're sitting blind waiting for our local newspapers to say something.
Well, I could check cnn and news sites, but are any New Yorkers here that can report "live"?

Just a bit concerned for my sis

The storm will hit the NY area on Sunday.

More will be known about the intensity and severity of the storm tonight and throughout the day tomorrow.

I just got off the phone with a buddy in the NJ and Philadelphia area.

He told me that the state ordered all the casinos in Atlantic City to close....I haven't verified this yet, but who knows maybe this will boost the numbers over the weekend.

Since the state was worried the evacuation orders would be ignored by many on the barrier islands, the state decided to cut the power off to the area in hopes it will foircew more people to bey the evacuation orders.

Last i heard they are evacuating Atlantic City ,Cape May and many many other ocean front towns, The garden state parkway will be closed at midnite and be just used for emergency vehicles.

I am about 50 minutes north of manhatten , in the realm of 75 mile per hour winds !
