One way to think of how a core update operates is to imagine you made a list of the top 100 movies in 2015. A few years later in 2019, you refresh the list. It's going to naturally change. Some new and wonderful movies that never existed before will now be candidates for inclusion. You might also reassess some films and realize they deserved a higher place on the list than they had before.
The list will change, and films previously higher on the list that move down aren't bad. There are simply more deserving films that are coming before them...

But I doubt it.

There is currently more of these sites out there than was before the last update, and some of them are killing organic SERP. At times it well annoys me as for some keywords they all rank in the top just below each other pushing organics away down.

..and 7/8 to 3/4 could just be the result of natural fluctuations/testing by Google...either on your page/terms or those around you.

Any movements yesterday would likely have been natural and not related to any core update, logically it would be too early (unless the internet is full of SEO people/webmasters saying they moved unexpectedly)

The way I look at it, there's 3 ways this can possibly go for me.
1: hurt my sites
2: makes no difference
3: helps my sites

Nothing so far seems to be the target of a negative effort, which implies nothing will drop unexpectedly (ie because of anything done to the page/site).

Some strong data suggests that backlinks have been given more weight. So, if true, then it's possible some sites will rise and knock yours down (although if you've been building/gaining links then now is a time when they may show some enhanced results).

Equally, if true, bad backlinks may have more potential to harm.

Early days though, and all could change. Could go well into Dec until it's all over.


PS The backlink thing make some sense at this time of year. Authoritative brands are already ranked, and either pay for ads for brand awareness purposes or just because they can and it makes no financial loss. It's the smaller businesses - that might not have the backlink-generated authority - that will get forced into paying to be seen = Google $s in pocket.

Pinterest the biggest loser it would seem, maybe more of a correction in that respect though as there was a lot of noise about pinterest overly dominating in some verticals from previous updates.

Well, the stupid PR sites are still dominating gambling searches, so Google didn't do much to fix spam in their last "spam update" nor this "core update" as far as I am concerned.

We saw some mild fluctuations, both up and down. Nothing to write home about. Nothing truly actionable to speak of.
