    Default Google MUM update

    Hi everyone

You’ve probably heard of google MUM update and that its introduction is marked for the beginning of 2022. If it goes as announced, MUM will radically change the look of search results as well as the way search is used in general, and that update will kill SEO forever.

Does anyone know anything more about this MUM update and how to prepare for it.

If it works as described, I'd suggest it won't 'kill' SEO but it will evolve SEO and probably call for even greater skill in how you present information.

As a user this sounds incredibly annoying:

MUM AI, on the other hand, will make search dialogues between user and Google more like a real conversation. Here is what a future dialogue with Google might look like:

User: When was Thomas Müller born?
Google: What Thomas Müller do you mean?
User: No idea. Can you show me pictures?
Google: Here are images of three different Thomas Müllers
User: I mean the one in the middle
    Google: The footballer?
    User: Yes
Google: According to Wikipedia, Thomas Müller, German football player, was born on 13.9.1989
User: Thanks. What outstanding achievements did he have?
Google: His goal against …. in … impressed many people.
User: I’d like to see that
Google: I found this match on YouTube. Should I fast forward to the goal?
    User: Yes, please
Google then opens YouTube video and starts at 77:30 mins
User: There was an English player that scored a similar goal
    Google: In 2010 …. from …. scored a similar goal against ….
I don't want to have to have a conversation with google, just show me the damn results!

I don't think it will be quite like that.

But it's what they are doing now (with some searches and to a lesser extent), but the understanding is they will be able to enhance. It will be able to link all the pieces of important information around an entity that you (or their collective historic data suggests) might ask, and give them to you in intuitively linked results pages.

Sounds pretty good to me for your standard searcher in the street if it works, and remains to be seen.

    The intent?

Keep a searcher on Google for as long as possible without sending them off to an actual external page (which of course is not so good for us).

Problem is, if the changes all come about based on these so called conversations between a few searchers and the AI, they will base on what they think is relevant with a small subset of searchers, who are willing to have the chat with the AI.

Caveat's I see in the tests are:
#1 Most people searching google have no interest in talking to either a bot or a person about their search.

#2 Those that refuse the conversation may be the more active searcher they want to base the algo on.

#3 Those that are willing to have the conversation may do so partially to skew results in their favor.

In addition, it sounds stupid, time consuming, as well as it does sound more like google is doing everything they can to keep the searcher on their page as long as possible, so they can show more ads, and lead the searcher to their sponsored content.

If you are doing your SEO correctly then there is currently little to fear from an update that is not yet fully understood.

Our advice is to keep building a sticky website and serve your users and you will most likely be unaffected by any changes. This has always helped us get through the previous updates that were going to 'kill SEO' and yet here we are today - all still doing SEO and largely the same way we always have as it still brings results.

I personally am not really fussed about updates.

Will be interesting to see the actions/reactions taken.

Looks more like an evolution of what Google is already doing. Days of stuffing keywords on a not-so-good content are long gone anyway.

After 15 years within the SEO industry there has been argued from time to time that the upcoming Google SERP update will kill SEO. So far it has not been the case and I would be surprised if it will happen this time.

It's impossible to kill SEO. Yes, many think of backlinks only when they talk about SEO but it's much more than just backlinks. So search engine optimisation will always be with us... OK, now we have social media optimisation as well now.
