I had a go once and was breaking even and ditched it but I really wasn't putting 100% into it tbh, I know its very profitable for a lot of people and I think it could of been for me too if I had made more of an effort with my choices
I've used it a few times on a small scale and also once for a larger campaign. Sometimes it feels like you're throwing money down the drain, other times it makes you think you're a genius.
You really need to focus on specific high converting long tails and have custom landing pages with different tracking codes so that you can figure out the true value of the PPC traffic.

Q. How do you make a small fortune?
A. Start with a large fortune, begin a PPC campaign, and work backwards from there!

Good post by TheGooner - it scares me that it can suck your budget dry very quickly
I have several ongoing CPC campaigns at Google for some years now and I'm still very happy with the results. Although I have to confess, these are all mobile campaigns, which are A LOT cheaper than the regular campaigns.
Just recently started working with AdCenter as well and, although their reach is limited compared to mr G, the results look good and they are even cheaper.
The best of CPC search campaigns is that you get highly targeted visitors.
So for mobile traffic is definitely worth a try, without risking to loose a lot of money.

mobile traffic seems like the highlight at the moment, have you been advertising there for a long time?
