Google Ranking and site changes

Can anybody give me their opinion on Google rankings and making changes to a site. Converting to https has required many changes to multiple pages in order to make the page secure. Will google give me a ranking penalty if I modify say 20 pages a day to make the key turn grey to a lock?

I have heard different opinions on this, I would think Google is sophisticated to know that pages need to be optimized in order to enable a lock status but with Google who knows.

I've checked one of your sites and it already redirects to https. I really doubt fixing the issues will make a problem. The common issue is with the change itself.

I would try to be as smooth as possible. We've done several site changes, to different sites that we own, sometimes we see huge fluctuations, others we don't. It depends on which types of changes you're making. You can literally destroy years of work if you don't do it properly.

If you only have to change the images to be hosted on your own server, i think this will not have an impact on the rankings.
But indeed, be sure to do everything else right.
For wordpress use the "really simple ssl" plugin, it is realy simple and fixes all internal links

Just redirect the whole site.. you shouldn't see much change, even if you do it usually comes back quick.. ignore the post about editing pages by small amounts ssl has been aroind long time.. it's a complete fairytale

islandmaan, Make sure you never overdo anything, as Google is fussy and will put your site's in the sandbox if you do. I know from unpleasant experience.

And I think that modifying 20+ pages a day might not work out too well for you.. My advice is to modify only about 15 pages Instead. We're all here to help each other. Good luck.

It is best to put a full redirect to https. If you can not do it quickly - it is better to configure the site on the local server and put it when it is ready.

You can use secure layer, but nowadays something changed very quickly.

Your site seems to be wordpress so use really simple ssl wordpress plugin to make your images secure too.

Converting your site to a https site is one of the ranking factors recently.

The critical thing is to make the transformation at once not 20 pages daily!


I recommend you to use an SSL plugin for a smoother transfer. You may browse it under the plugins directory.

recently i changed all urls from flat to sub dir and what happens ? the google take all new pages in index but didn't throw out 404 pages

URL moves to https does temporarily bring down impression count, but sites that are ranked high need not worry. Google puts in extra resources to bring their properties up to speed.

For example, if GPWA decided to move to SSL, they'll recover their rankings and impressions quickly compared to your website, which has just entered the spin zone.

If you're new then go ahead and make the changes, it will be a while before Google starts sending you traffic anyways.

SSL only becomes a ranking factor, if all else is equal. Which factually never is the case.

Secondly, even that factor diminishes once every site has one.
