As far as I know, it just promotes google. I've heard that linking to search engines may improve rankings, but I don't know for sure. Several people have links to the major search engines on their home page. If you want a search box on your site, sign up with someone as an affiliate where at least you can make a little money from searches.

Google doesn't - PageRank is only affected by incoming links, not outgoing.

    Hi Serge,

Donl is correct, your Page Rank will not be affected in any way by you putting up a Google search box on your site. However, there is probably a small chance that this has some positive effect on how Googlebot views your site whenever she visits. It certainly can't hurt, and since Google is a great search engine you are doing your visitors a favour.
