    Default Update

Sorry the thread was not updated:

OCTOBER 15, 2019by Anthony Telesca, Team Member The surgeon updated my surgery date to this coming Tuesday, 22 October.

Thanks so much for all the support, I am looking forward to getting this fixed and begin the recovery process. Todd will post updates once I am admitted to the hospital.
OCTOBER 23, 2019by Jay Todd, Organizer UPDATE: Anthony had his surgery this morning. He was on the table for just over 2.5 hours, which was significantly less than the 4 hours they had estimated. I am told the procedure was successful and he will be fine, although he will have a hell of a scar for a while.

He was awake this afternoon and even spoke to me on the phone for a few seconds to let me know he was okay. He sounded beat to hell... but that's to be expected. He will be in the hospital a few more days but hopes to be home by this weekend. Thoughts and prayers appreciated as the long road of recovery and physical therapy begins shortly.

OCTOBER 29, 2019by Jay Todd, Organizer UPDATE: Anthony went home from the hospital just before the weekend. He's in a massive amount pain that the medication really doesn't cover. Eating is a challenge, as are most normal daily activities, but he's dealing with it.

This week he will hopefully get the 50 staples in his neck taken out. That will help with his level of discomfort and maybe even speed his recovery. He is still weeks away from getting his brace taken off, though... and weeks more of physical therapy on top of that... but he's on his way.

    Thanks, friends

I am home recovering. I am grateful for all the support and well wishes, thank you. In five weeks will get x-rays to determine if the brace can be removed.

    Thank you for asking.

Recovery is taking much longer than anticipated. I was hoping to be out of the brace 6 weeks after surgery and then begin the 6 weeks physical therapy. However, I am still in the brace and will have new x-rays and consult with the surgeon 13 January 2020, to determine if I can begin the process of removing the brace. They said I would remove it for two hours then wear again for two hours, then slowly add more time without it as I can tolerate. Then I should be able to begin physical therapy in February.

I unable to drive and it is challenging to be comfortable. I still can't get use to sleeping with the brace. I only sleep a couple hours at a time. I do have shoulder pain from the muscles adjusting (with the polymer spacers that replaced the cartilage in my neck, I am actually slightly taller now, muscle spasms are expected to continue while I wear the brace). I also have sharp nerve pain in my hand, they believe it was caused by the nerve testing during surgery (although they won't say for certain). I have seen an orthopedic hand surgeon and a neurologist for it. They have me on nerve medication and will have to follow up in a couple months. Hopefully is will get better, the pain in my hand is worse than any pain I had in my neck.

The important thing is my spinal cord is free from obstruction and there is no threat of it closing. This has been quite a journey, I am grateful that the surgery was a success and expect to be in London for ICE/LAC. Thank you everyone for your support and prayers.

Good that the surgery was a success. Recovery needs time, don't rush it.

Hopefully you can enjoy the holidays. Take care of yourself!

Nerves from your neck, run all the way down to your hands/fingers, so your hand pain is probably a temporary complication from surgery.

Back in 1990 I fell out of tree (lol don't ask) and landed flat on my back. Thought I'd crippled myself, cause I couldn't feel nor move my legs for a good 30 min. Just had to lay there. A few years later, when moving some furniture, L5 disk popped, and was out of action for weeks. In 2010 the arm on the office chair gave way, and subsequently twisted my back. The following day, woke up early to an intense foot pain: like someone had a blow torch on it. That feeling rose all the way to my knee, where I was literally screaming in pain. Was hospitalised for that. After that, approx 50% below my knee has remained numb to this day. The only real, sustain relief I've had with my back/leg, is with Cold Laser Therapy.

Nerve damage, and nerves, take ages to heal.

Either way, sounds like your have a great team of specialist supporting your recovery.

Try not to put too many expectations on your fast recovery. In essence, take care of yourself, mate!
