Should smoking be banned in public places?

Many countries around the world are banning smoking in public places. Recently in Switzerland the smoking ban was rejected. In Spain it was met with opposition for many years before the law was finally respected.

The question is, do you think smoking should be banned in public places such as restaurants and bars?

I was in Zurich, Switzerland the other week and although I don't smoke it did seem like most places were geared up for not smoking. We went in 1 bar where you could smoke and it really surprised me. Being an outside tourist I assumed the whole place was no smoking inside just like the UK.
And I'd add when the UK smoking ban came in I wasn't in favour of it, I have since changed my mind and think it has been briliant, although there has been down sides to it such has harming the pub trade

When i was at the CBG affiliate conference a couple of months ago - I took couple of trips over to the US and was actually surprised you can smoke everywhere and anywhere. I was in a shopping center and it was like a cloud of smoke. Same as the casino - just filled with smokers and heavy drinkers (drinks are free).

On the Canadian side can't smoke anywhere and have to be like 100 feet away from buildings to smoke. Either way I do not mind I just find it funny that the US would not have such laws, but then again big corporations run the government anyways.

Could not vote as there was no "I don't care option"

Over here in Australia they introduced a ban several years ago on smoking indoors in public.
Some people weren't happy about it when the law was introduced but I think it's good for non-smokers not to have to breathe second hand smoke.

And in Tasmania, if you smoke in a car with anyone under 18 present it is a $110 fine.

Hahaha, that is exactly where my thoughts went too. Before seeing the actual post, just from the thread title about banning smoking I thought it was some question about forum access for GPWA member "smoking". I though, "Oh no, was there a sudden flame war that I missed? I need to check into this!" and I was in disbelief that "smoking" would have acted unprofessionally. Any my rationale for why "in public places" didn't make me think of something else is that I thought it was referring to the public sections of the forum. Haha, so glad I was only misunderstanding the thread title.

In terms of prohibiting smoking in public places, this is a huge issue in the land-based side of the industry. Whenever there are plans to prohibit smoking in an area where there is a casino, the casino is always out there fighting tooth and nail to prevent it (at least in the U.S. land-based gaming market). A lot of gamblers really enjoy smoking when they play. There is such a strong connection between the two that there was even an electronic cigarette company exhibiting at ICE this past January.

I am a smoker (not many) but I'm happy not to smoke in public places - I live in the UK and you can't smoke in any restaurants/bars etc which I think is more than fine.

Honestly, I voted NO, because I'm tired searching for places where I can smoke, and in some airports, it's not allowed to smoke at all. And an electronic cigarette don't help, as I need a real smoke.

Pre-smoking ban in the UK I would have said I didn't really care, but now I've got used to it I'm 100% in favour of the ban. Plus about 80% of my friends who smoked have given up since they stopped being allowed to smoke in pubs, which is definitely a good thing!

Nah, can't smoke anywhere and everywhere in the US. Most states are non smoking. Casinos have smoking and non smoking sections still. There is no smoking in malls that I know of. If you are a smoker, you may as well live on Mars lol.

Without the smoking ban coming into place in the UK I don't think I would ever have been able to quit smoking. The pint and a cig combination was to enjoyable to give up until I was forced to.

For me it was great as it gave me the push I needed to quit properly.

Well done! I wish my husband would quit smoking, he finds it extremely difficult. One reason could be that here people are heavy smokers.

It is more difficult when you are surrounded by other smokers all the time, another good reason for the ban to be in place.

A smoking ban is a great thing when it's respected. I don't think non smokers and staff in restaurants and bars should have to breathe second hand smoke, although it colder countries it's necessary to provide a heated, comfortable place outside for smokers to use. I noticed the last time I was in Ireland that many pubs provide beer garden type areas with outdoor heaters. I think this solution suits everyone.

yeah, when I went Vegas although you can smoke in the casino even there they were pretty strict on smoking

Much more comprehensive solution all round, and it saves an painful death from lung cancer.

Because gambling and smoking are both activities of the largely ignorant and ill-educated. Embarrassing, to say the least, for gambling promoters.

Although I'm a heavy smoker I think it's very good to ban smoking in public places, because of the health effects.

I agree, as long as there are designated smoke free areas, I don't mind if there is a place for smokers (just as long as non-smokers don't have to walk through the smoke). Respect each others rights, without banning it all together. It is just easier to ban it and that is what tends to happen.
