In addition to the public forums and registration for a username, we also have private forums -- and there is an application process for becoming a private member. It is available at: https://www.gpwa.org/join.html.

The page with the application also lists a number of criteria required in order to become a private member (must run a gaming portal, must not copy/steal content, and other criteria).

We have a team of volunteers who are senior members research each application before approval, so it can take some time to review the application depending on how many gaming sites the applicant has (we review them all) and how busy the group is in their personal work.

I think that I submitted one at Pubcon, and now I'm quite confused. I thought that all the sites would be reviewed and only the good ones were chosen to get the seal. But now I see that you are doing this in chunks, which will take a very very long time to accomplish.

Hi Herofist,
We do have your private membership application from PubCon / G2E under consideration by the membership team. Unfortunately you're correct that it will take a long time before we're able to get to the PubCon applications. We have a number of applications that came in before the show and we try to do the reviews in the order the applications were received, so the backlog has an impact on processing time for new ones.

I did want to clarify two things though. First, there is a difference between the Seal of Approval program you refer to is different than private membership, although one must be a private member before being awarded the seal and the requirements are similar. A request for the seal would have to be submitted after membership approval.

Second, this may be clarified with the above distinction between the Seal of Approval and Private Membership, but the membership applications are done individually rather than in batches -- the applicant is notified when it is done rather than having to wait to send out lots of notifications together. Actually, this will be how we proceed with the seal program once it has been running long enough that the process is more firmly in place. We wanted to announce it more fully once a group was approved, so that was the reason for a batch announcement for the first ones. We will likely move to a system where seal candidates are notified individually first but then we publish a periodic announcement indicating the full list of newly approved sites.

Ya, this site has some pretty cool threads in it, so I'm glad to be here.

Can I make a suggestion? It might not be too difficult to "automatically" give membership to those applicants that are listed in DMOZ, such as myself. This means that our sites have already been hand reviewed for professionalism by a third party.

This can be easily done by use of a Firefox tool called SEO Quake, and can also manually be done by typing in http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search?search=WEBSITENAME.COM

I'd hardly call DMOZ an approver of quality sites. Those directories are a great example of corruption. I never was able to get my sites in DMOZ. Never could get them reviewed. I've always been told the queue is too long.. Yet others submit applications and their friends, the editors, approve their site straight away.

While I am fairly sure it wouldn't happen, I would be quite upset if DMOZ was used as membership critieria here.

Ditto on DMOZ - good lord, I couldn't get listed with them at all. I agree Matt, the editors are very subjective and honestly, do they really abide by any criteria other than their own subjective feeling (or relationship to the webmaster)?

Personally, I think DMOZ has lost its credibility entirely.
