Have you undertaken any special development projects based on COVID-19?

The world has changed quite a bit over the past few months as the result of the coronavirus pandemic, and it has certainly had a significant effect on our industry. I know from rankings of sites involved in gambling that both sports betting and fantasy sports sites have seen significant drops in traffic, and that every other vertical from casino to poker to bingo to financial has seen a relative increase.

For this week's poll I ask if there are any development projects you have undertaken as a direct result of the pandemic.

I know we undertook two specific projects.

First, we implemented an update to block all traffic from Spain to the content of our affiliate sites, with a nice message explaining why, at the very beginning of April. We decided that was the most expedient way to comply with Spanish regulatory requirements against the promotion of online gambling during the pandemic, and also to satisfy our affiliate program partners. That change is on my mind today since I understand the restrictions on promoting online gaming in Spain expire at midnight tonight, so we can now revert our sites to normal operation in Spain.

Second, being pretty heavily involved in the land-based gaming world, we undertook a major project to chronicle and publish all of the gaming property openings and closings in the United States and Canada. In total, at this point in time we have tracked the closing of over 2,000 gaming properties, about 900 of which have since reopened. We have shared that data for a while, but we are about to roll out a brand new web application that illustrates the status of the land-based gaming industry in North America and shows off the wealth of data we have gathered.
