I know this may be a lame question. What is hot-linking just so i can keep an eye out for it?

I think it's when they pull images directly from your own website which means they're draining your bandwidth.

    Thumbs up

Hi, but you can easily protect yourself from hot-linking via .htaccess (or server headers).

    Way to go Dave,

This is usually a pretty effective way to combat this....only often the picture I would use might not be so.......nice.....

That's a good question. Does hotlinking an image give PR? It's not a link, but is there value in Google's eyes?

    Great question

I would think it very unlikely that Google would give any credit to the hotlinkee for his image being hotlinked somewhere else. There is no link back as such, the offending site is just sucking in the image and using up the victim's bandwidth. Thee is no reference back to the hoster of the image.

If the site ranks highly for some search terms then I guess your hotlinked image might appear in Google's image search - however it will place it in context showing the other guys site with no reference to yours, apart from the image location which a surfer could only find out with right clicking to'show image' or 'image info' or something.

Just a guess really, I was interested in this and had a look around for any references to it, but there isn't anything out there I could find with information. There were a few blog posts on how to try to get a link back from a hotlinker, which sort of implies that the hotlinked image alone was not helpful in that respect.

There is something you could do that would be really sneaky..

Replace the image on your server with something offensive.. or nawty like an image that says

"I stole this image from www.domain.com"

And just rename the image they were using to something else.

    Free advertising too

I love that idea Renee. lol That's really sneaky. My problem is that I would have the same image somewhere on my site and not remember to change it.

    very good idea.

Yea I have known people to use porn images and images of excrement....

For those that would hotlink images without permission and steal bandwith....do you want your visitors to arrive at your site only to see an image of a floater instead of a casino banner?

I say don't ask, just do. If that person gets upset, they are the only ones to blame.

I was reading a blog post (I can't find he exact one now there are a lot of similar tales out there I suspect it has happened multiple times rather than being an urban legend) of someone who had a fairly big image hotlinked from his site, and the hotlinker incorporated it into a myspace home page theme thingy, then promoted that. Of course that hammered the guy's bandwidth quite hard!

So he swapped the image out for tubgirl. Google it if you have to, but not if you are easily upset or of a nervous disposition.

The person who had hotlinked and made the myspace theme then threated to sue the guy for doing this. Ho hum.

If you have PHP installed, you could add some automation to image replacement.
The idea is simple: for each image requested by a visitor Apache execute a PHP script, and the PHP script in turn decides whether the visitor should be presented with proper image or improper one.

This way, if the visitor comes from a hotlinking website he is automatically presented with some polite advertisement of original website, or any other content of your choice.

I think tubgirl or goatse would be perfect examples of how to get even... Did I mention I'm actually the devil?

    Renee,

I wasn't really asking, and trust me, I have found a few over the years that have hotlinked a few of my images, and trust me they often change their mind shortly after I discover it.....
