Default How does google know you're writing interesting articles..?

I've seen it said that writing interesting and engaging articles helps in a google ranking..

So how does google know your article is interesting or engaging..?

I'm assuming the evaluation of all websites for ranking is done by google bots, with maybe rare exceptions..

So are we saying the bots can really tell if an article is interesting..?

But the user can ... and Google has tons of possibilities to measure user signals like bounce rate, time on page, returning rate etc etc etc ...
And if your users send bad signals only (like super high bounce rate, low time on page, no returning visitors etc), because your website and your content is bad ... Google count 1+1
For sure they are thousand other things.

I doubt they can, but they can probably tell with reasonable accuracy if it is spammy.

There is no magic to Google - despite the hype they are NOT evaluating the body of the article other than testing it for basic metrics.

Given that Google's search results are compiled and ordered by something that appears to have less knowledge than a 5-year old kid, it's also unlikely to be a comprehension algo or anything like that.

So keep it basic. I think that the signals they look for are +1's on google+, likes on Facebook, sharing posts and clicks, "natural" links (whatever that might really be) and people directly selecting the page to read when it's presented in Google search results.

So are we saying the bots can really tell if an article is interesting..?

Google is capable of understanding whether a page is interesting or not for humans.

    Three methods are used:

    A) Google Chrome browser and Android operating system.

Google can tell what the bounce rate is and the number of pages visited on a site, how much time someone spends on a specific page, whether someone returns to this page / site, if he saves it to his favorites and even if he really reads the pages. (Mouse moves are taken into account in the browser and indicate if you are slowly moving the mouse down: you are reading)

    B) Links.

Each quality bakclink is a vote in favor of a page. (Low quality links are not worth anything and can even harm a site ) The internal links in a website are taken into consideration also.

    C) Artificial intelligence: Rank Brain algorithm. This serves two purposes: first, to interpret the meaning of requests made by users but also to understand (to the extent that an artificial intelligence program can "understand') an article.

So when Google talks about RankBrain as the third-most important signal, does it really mean as a ranking signal? Yes. Google reconfirmed to us that there is a component where RankBrain is directly contributing somehow to whether a page ranks.

How exactly? Is there some type of “RankBrain score” that might assess quality? Perhaps, but it seems much more likely that RankBrain is somehow helping Google better classify pages based on the content they contain. RankBrain might be able to better summarize what a page is about than Google’s existing systems have done.

    Conclusion?

Then yes Google know if you write really interesting and engaging articles through Chrome and Android, Links and RankBrain.

The bounce rate and time spent reading the article are always good indicators of its quality.

Although people here make valid points, Google are very much able to calculate if a website contains interesting content.

You have to remember while Google checks your website it also checks millions of others every day. Google used its own database a very long time ago to punish sites that plagiarise content. It now uses its own database to check what information people found interesting by analysing items such as bounce rate and favourites, social shares etc... (as suggested above). It then compares the writing style and what you're writing about to compare against other sites.

It doesn't physically read the article although RankBrain suggests it does, it analyses the content rather than read it. Google have always said "content is king" and it has some weight against search engines but it turns your website into a great spiral too. Good interesting content is likely to be shared on other websites creating natural back links. This is how Google wants your website to work, it doesnt want you buying links or writing on blogs and getting your friends to link to you hence why every update is mainly trying to sift out the natural links from the unnatural ones.
