Default How Important is the Site Title Tag

I noticed on some of my websites I do not have a site title or sitetitle tag because I use an image instead of the words. When adding an image I always had to leave it blank so that the words did not show up on the header. Is this a big deal?

While there is no sitetitle I do still have a "title" tag from the title of the page.

    Thanks

No, I have tried adding a h1 and without also.. it makes no difference as 95% of my traffic comes in via individual pages.. however it may depend on the type of site you have and the content.. a 10 page site it would be very important to have the front as the show case. Google will usually just add your domain as title anyhow

    Can you give an example?

Do you mean you are using an image in the page header? so you are not using H1 or H2 titles in the page?

Whilst this is best SEO practice, it is not absolutely essential - its is simply advised to get the best SEO from your page you have a H1 & H2 tag somewhere.

If you prefer the image instead of text, then that is your preference. Its not the best way to do it, but its your choice.

You see the text shown in any case? I do have an image and text, but the text only appears if the logo is not loading (or for a brief moment).

Google says it's important, but then again I use Chrome and it doesn't even show site titles(I know, unrelated; but perhaps related).

I use H1 and H2 tags in the actual content but not in the header. I use an image in the header so there is no words hence no tags. I just noticed that in some my websites where I do use actual words in the header it is a sitetitle tag but when not having words I do not have that.

OK so can we first establish that we are on the same page...

On a webpage you have a <head> section where you put your meta tags like <title> - so you should definitely have both of those two on every webpage!

The header area is not a strict coding requirement - it is simply a design element used to identify the above fold area... and is normally above and inclusive of your menu, logo, maybe a banner and some other links. It may look like this <div class="header">

Header is part of a page... 1 page multiple sections... header and footer are essentially design elements that we have all come to use as standard terms. You don't actually have to call them header or footer.

Therefore if you have <head> and then you include <title> and then you use a <H1> and/or a <H2> (SOMEWHERE) in your page, you have covered the basics in my opinion that <H1> does not have to be in the header, but you probably want to have it somwhere near the top of the page as its a good indication of what your content is about.

Is this what you are after?

Yep pretty much. Every page I have has a title, H1,h2,h3 etc etc so I am pretty sure I am OK there. Some websites where I do not use an image as a header, I have 2 title tags. One is for the actual website title (sitetitle) and 1 is for the page title (title). I just wanted to make sure it was OK of I didn't have that second title tag which is the actual website title.

This especially happens in WordPress sites. If I am using a logo or image as the header (which also has the website name in the image), then I have to leave the Site Title and Tagline blank in the General Settings of the dashboard. Then since they are blank there is no sitetitle tag but still a title tag for the actual page.

Do you use yoast or any other SEO plugin? They normally overwrite the Wordpress title and descriptions set in admin>settings.

However it is always good practice to use those default wordpress settings and not leave them blank. The problem is your site theme will often publish that text to the page if no logo is present. This is purely a design issue in that case and you'd be advised to hide the text with a CSS class. So include the text, find the div that encases the text and use display:none; in your CSS on that section of the div if you want 'Nothing' to show.
