This is how I find the "magic number":

    1) search for the main keywords I want to rank
    2) identify a bunch of competitors that are ranking in the first page
    3) find their referring domains (I use Majestic, but other tools like Ahrefs are equally good)
    4) filter out all the low-quality domains (meaning, with metrics below a threshold: in case of Majestic, I discard those with Trust Flow below 20)
    5) filter out all the "too high-quality" domains (I mean, sites like wordpress.com, blogspot.com etc). These are good referring domains, but the backlinks are surely from low-value pages, so not that useful for their ranking.
    6) count how many ref domains you have left for each competitor.

The mean of these numbers is your magic number (use a grain of salt of course).

    Hope it helps.

    Default Backlinks Importance !

I'm new to SEO, just wondering how many backlinks a website needs to start ranking in google.

I think it depends on submission types you were using like (Social bookmarking, directories or etc.) but I think you should focus on DA and PA of every you are using, As of now I made 4,500 backlinks to my website and we are currently ranking in our focus keyword.

    It depends.
As stated above, if you have new website with very little content and zero traffic, you shouldn't get links.
Also, great content and excellent content will make link building more effective.
Build strong foundation with great content and UX and focus link building once you start to see some traffic coming in.

I would build very few backlinks while your in the Google sandbox and then only very gradually, unique high quality content is a lot more important these days along with some good careful onpage seo.

You need to focus on quality of your domains 10 good dofollow backlinks are much better than 50 dofollow links form domains with low authority. Can say that you need from 100 domains and more to get some normal traffic in betting. Use Ahrefs to know your DR and UR. When you will have DR more than 20 you will have enough trust to get in top 3.

And why do you find tons of domains with a DR of 20/30/ even 40 without reasonable rankings? Because its just another number. If it would be that easy, setup a domain with some good content and add links untill DR20 and you‘ll rank?! Where would be the challenge?

Ofc DR can be a good indicator but i don’t need 100 backlinks to reach DR20 nor i need 100 backlinks for good and valuable rankings. In the same time you can build 200 and it wouldn’t be enough.

You can’t cut it down to a fix number or 3rd party metrics.

I agree with your post. Yes, for example, on godaddy are many domains with DR>20 but without any positions in SERP. And it's bad variants for links because there aren't any trust. You need to build links for non-spammy and related sites/pages and then you will have enough trust to rank in top3 with good keywords.

You need good links to rank in top 3 and I meaning about good links with traffic and some positions in SERP. And my number of 100 links is about that.

I can't help but bite. This 'advice' comes from an affiliate who doen't have mobile optimised sites, coding is still using old-school-tables with font size and color etc., etc, worse the sites are keyword-stuffed banner farms.

It all depends on your "competition". Sometimes there are terms that you rank without doing any special SEO.

A few sites on my network rank for the most competitive terms (think t shirts). Most got good back links from news media after Google showed the love, and this can easily take up to two years (though this is not a rule).

It's natural for new brand names to get link coverage through media, but unnatural for affiliate sites, unless they write about a topic that becomes viral and people are searching for your article.

Anything else is not going to cut it, and your site will get hit (takes 3 to 6 months for Google to catch up).

It depends on what niche. In addition to links, internal website optimization + writing new content should also be carried out and all this together gives a result. It all depends on your competitors. Examine them, see what links they have. Good luck
