Default How Many Hours a Month do you Spend Working on Link Exchanges?

There has been some discussion on the thread www.gpwa.org/forum/linkbuilding-vs-content-171036.html about the relative importance of spending time working on link exchanges versus spending time developing site content.

I thought it would be interesting to find out how much time webmasters actually spend working on link exchanges each month.

I don't spend much time at all, only an hour or two.

I should probably spend more time but to be honest, the amount of links that get deleted by unscrupulous Webmasters drive me crazy.

Hopefully as I generate and add more content, people will link naturally to my site. It's a slow process though.

I have to agree with Doolally - I also only spend a few hours each month working on links. I probably get about 200 link requests a day , but once I have sifted through all the viagra , pharmaceutical , hotels in vietnam etc links I am probably left with about 30 reasonable link requests , and whilst I have all good intentions to respond to everyone of them - they normally land up in my to do box which currently has 1036 emails in it !
The funny thing is that I never delete them and sometimes go back 8 months later to find that the poor sods very often still have my link up , so normally out of guilt and decency I still link back to them even though I could probably get away with it if I left it

I also don't spend a lot of times, my last link exchange was a month or two ago. So, maybe 1 or 2 hours per month, but when I started my site I spent a lot of times, I always thought about my PR, and only after 3-4 months of such work I understood that it was not important.

I'm in the process of linking to good sites through my link pages without asking for a reciprocal. My idea is to dilute the number of reciprocated links from these pages.

Does that make sense to anyone? Is it a good idea?

I think I spend about 3-4 hrs/month on link exchange, about half of it in handling incoming link requests and the other half in making link requests to good sites. I always think of spending more time, but... man proposes, god disposes.

This is similar to what I have been doing. I found another poker related site that was a PR6. In his site he had a special link saying why will I not link to you. It was a detailed article explaining all the negative ways of asking for link exchanges and one of them being asking for one back.

It makes perfect sense in that you should be linking to pages for your viewers not the bots. That should be the purpose although we all know it's both.

So here is what I do and have had good success. I add their link and take a screen shot. Than search the whois for a name of the particular webmaster so I can direct my email to a person. I than let them know that I have linked to their site, pointing to the link and why I linked to them. I will leave my info for them but I do not ask, I just tell them that if they are interested here it is. Than close with some kind of statement.

When my site was a PR0 I was able to get some links from PR3-4. I have had a much more pleasent response from other affiliates for uniquness, and courtesy.

Also another thing that has lead me to pick up a few more links without intentionally doing so is whenever I have had to make any changes whatso ever to my partners pages I email all of them directly as a courtesy email regarding their link and where it has been moved to.

To many times people change pages and dont let theother webmaster's know which in turn if they are using a program to track their own links coming in you could lose them to....make sense?

Personally I gave up spending time at all looking for links exchanges a long time ago. Between the ones who ask to add their link first, but never reply, and the ones who delelete your link after a short while, I realised quickly that it was just a waste of time.

Now that my site's PRs have improved themsleves, for sure without the help of links exchanges, I receive a consequent amount of requests, and I must admit, I do not reply to all of them (and 80% of my replies are negative, especially to the so-called 3-way links exchange requests, another rubbish way added to confuse and waste the links exchange hunter's time - just a nightmare to check that your links are on place at the other end... - together with links exchange pages consisting of a list of hundreds links, etc..), simply because I prefer to spend my time wiser... tough I try to be polite when it seemed to me (but are we ever sure?) that the request is genuine and hassle-free...

My last site got a PR3 after a month only, without one single links exchange...

I'm not looking for links exchanges any more, if some one asked me for link and I like his site, I'll do it,so is "0" time.
