Google Analytics (and probably all web analytics software) provides information about how visitors reach your site. If you go to the Acquisition Overview page in Google Analytics you can see the top channels that bring you traffic, and what percentage of your traffic arrives through each channel. These are the statistics for the main GPWA.org website:
Direct: 47.6%
Organic: 33.4%
Referral: 18.4%
Social: 0.5%
For our new GPWAtimes.org website the statistics look like this:
Direct: 47.1%
Referral: 39.4%
Organic: 10.0%
Social: 3.5%
Then, if I look at only mobile traffic, I see that 34.1% of the mobile traffic to the GPWAtimes.org website is through social networking sites.
It's not surprising to me that organic search is more important for the main GPWA website. The GPWAtimes.org website is newer, and barely indexed, so it makes sense that most of the visits are from direct links to the site right now. Over time I expect that will change. Additionally, it is interesting to see that social is more important for the magazine website, and that is is especially significant for mobile users.
Besides voting in the poll about how much of your main site's traffic is from organic search, share your thoughts about the distribution of visitors channels for your site, and the breakdown if you like.
