How Secure Do You Think ProtonMail Is?

ProtonMail is known for its strong encryption and privacy features, but how secure do you think it really is?

I heard that ProtonMail used to be considered very secure, but over time, due to legal pressures and a few privacy issues, it had to comply with certain authorities, which raised concerns about its absolute privacy.

Secure or private - two different things. Should be on par in security with Gmail, but in privacy, cant be as bad as stuff from Google, but who really knows!

I would start by considering my main concern (what information I want to protect and from whom) and use that to evaluate if ProtonMail is the best option. However, if you're just looking for more security and don't have a specific concern, yes, Proton is quite reliable.

It is as secure as you using it. If you have stupid password or bad security generally on your devices or simply risky behavior, then no email saves you.

Private it is not. It is a black box. Any email from 3rd party should be considered as open letter. If you want a private email, then go and make your own server. Then however you will likely *** up the security.

If you are sending email from proton mail address to another proton mail address then security and privacy is very good as the message and content can stay inside the ecosystem encrypted throughout - and is stored encrypted in both mail boxes.

If you are sending outside then it's a cleartext message that is sent which will trundle through a lot of servers - like a postcard.
What privacy are you expecting in that circumstance ?

Generally, I think that proton mail group focuses on security, and they are pretty good at it, better than most.

So I think that proton mail are one of the most secure commercial email services available - if you take the time to have a secure password, and use their VPN when accessing on public networks..

basically proton is a billion times more secure than pretty much ANY email service based on the US.

I use ProtonMail for my business and can verify that ProtonMail cannot access the content of my encrypted emails such that I cannot search all my emails with a keyword. I can only search based on from, to, and subject line -- no internal content of any email. It's a bit of a burden when I need to find emails based on keywords.

I use protonmail in addition to hushmail. Proton mail is much better.

What makes you say that? I would imagine with gmail - and the millions of user - it would be the most secure. I dont recall any major security breach on gmail ?

ProtonMail is pretty solid when it comes to security. Its end-to-end encryption means even they can’t read your emails, and being based in Switzerland gives it that extra privacy edge. Plus, they don’t log IP addresses, which is a bonus for anonymity. That said, no system is perfect, so it’s still smart to enable two-factor authentication and watch out for phishing attempts.
