Just looking at alternative plugs in for HREF Lang. Does anyone recommend any in particular? Or should we ditch plug ins to do manually?

If you can do it manually by rolling out a script then do that. One less plugin for your site. Always preferable.

If you want to use a plugin, I've researched this pretty extensively. Get the paid version of this hreflangtags [dot] com - completely worth the investment.
