incoming links

My Google Webmaster Tools shows I have 1,004 incoming links from one site to my index page. Why would anyone do this? Would google consider this link spam or something and penalize me? I've noticed my site has taking a big hit lately in the search result. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Have you talked to the site owner that has done this?

Is it another site in the same niche or is it unrelated?

Sounds like a sitewide link on that site. If you have very few links to begin with it could cause some problems. Either get more links, ask the person to remove it, or wait it out (I think it should fix itself natrually eventually).

It could also be a link from a listing in a directory (or something running directory style software) that has a bunch of filter options. If google doesn't know to ignore the extra parameters, it can create a huge number of similar versions of the same page.

Eg: .../directory/show-listings?language=xxx&pr=xxx&showresults=xxx

It's a gambling directory with 7,590 pages listed on google. Maybe it will go away but I noticed it about a month ago. Actually the site is whatcasinodotcom
