Can good internal linking keep your pages from falling into the supp's?
If so can someone go overkill on this to the point that it could actually hinder them?

We believe internal linking (together with strong content) is what drives most of the good search results that Casino City gets. External inbound links from others isn't really even on our radar screen from an SEO perspective. Of course, we're probably lucky in that respect in that we have massive amounts of good content that we can cross-link in ways that make good sense both to people and to search engines.

Thanks Micheal. Others in the poker industry have said to me that they don't even use a sitemap anymore as their linking structure takes over and keeps the engines happy and the site well indexed.
Same goes for external links. One person commented to me that they are pretty much worthless to a certain degree.
Should have posted this with the other but do you feel that content itself can drive more traffic and conversions than links ever could even those with high PR and authority sites?
Meaning say I have 50 relevant, informative pages that are keyword driven, tags, h1 and followers in place, but minimal to almost nil in external linking, great internally linked
will do better
than say 10 not poorly written but not as effective content but has excellent backlinks from aurthority sites with bang on anchor text.
I am just curios because each page I do, I am linking effectively now and placing all my tags and headers where they belong but I am still trying to get links to these pages when really what I am thinking is if they are optimized effeciantly this may actually do better than those that have the links.
i have some pages right now that have no external links to them, yet they are hitting 1-10 in position with google for some fairly competitive strategy topics. Yet other pages that I have been doing link exchanges for are still not performing as well as I feel they should be.
In a word Kaus ... MAYBE ... depending on where you are in the life cycle.
Here is my affiliate marketing 101.
From my experience - affiliate marketing is a three stage exercise.
IN THE BEGINNING ...
In the BEGINING you need traffic. Without traffic even the greatest prose which converted at an exceptionally high 2% or 3% will not be effective if you are only getting a few visitors a day.
But you link with almost anyone and everyone who will have you. Traffic is your goal - either via SEs or via direct linking with like minded sites.
I'd suggest oly worrying about the potential traffic of the site and the link (and not their PR) but whether that's accurate is still undecided.
At this stage life is hard - you need to work on links - and also keep the content up to standard - and you'll see little rewards for your efforts.
(most failed affiliates quit during this 12-24 month period)
IN THE MIDDLE ...
In the middle you start to make a few bucks - you can back off the links drive - instead preferring to exchange with only a select group - and preferably only thinkning about traffic now.
PR is worthless now (again only my though) you need more warm bodies to read your content which is becoming your focus.
The END GAME is all about content :
Once you have a strong site with good traffic bearing links and a reasonable SERPS position in the market that you are aiming at then all you should be thinking about is CONTENT, CONTENT, CONTENT.
I suspect that you are not in this luxurious position. That you have a youngish site - with little or no high PR links - and as such are getting less than 100 SE hits a day.
Content is the main source of traffic as I think. If you have unique and interesting content it will attract visitors and search engines. I lost a lot of time at the beginning of my gambling carrier by exchanging links. I thought about only PR that is not so important.
Kaus,
Here's my strategy for internal linking.
(1) Don't make sitewide links to unimportant internal pages. Sounds simple, but you'd be surprised at how many people place "About US" and "Contact US" links on every page! On your home page is sufficient, because the pages like these are just eating your link juice and not providing the best "quality" information that will convert into sales.
(2) lol.. I found that I don't have enough tips to actually make a numbered list.. lol..
(3) Good luck
I love number 2.
What I have been doing say for pfofiles is each person is connected to someone else so I find a way to mention the other and use a link.
Articles are connected from the home page three time. The main category and a couple of blurbs/intros to useful articles. Now each actual article also contains the same list of directroy as the original category page thus it makes it easy for the user to read one article and see another which may interest them and than again less clicking back to main article.
So currently I have 20-30 can't remeber but they are all linked through with the directory of them beneath plus I have also been linking the anchor words I want to be picked up for say bankroll management. Almost every time this phrase is used I link to the article with that subject.
Make sense?
I think that links within the content of a page to other internal pages add much more weight to a link. Internal linking is definately good and especially when the link comes from a page relevant to the one being linked to.
to do this, you could do this :I think that links within the content of a page to other internal pages add much more weight to a link.
you'll write article and you'll do some submission in the article directories....
you'll write articles that are avaible on other websites and in this way it is possible to obtain links.

Pages in the supplemental index is the result of a weakness in the linking structure and the PR of the page, so any serious strategy to improve (internal linking etc) will be fine.
Supplemental index is not related with Duplicate content, and the solution is to have high quality links.
From mattcutts.com :
As a reminder, supplemental results aren’t something to be afraid of; I’ve got pages from my site in the supplemental results, for example. A complete software rewrite of the infrastructure for supplemental results launched in Summer o’ 2005, and the supplemental results continue to get fresher. Having urls in the supplemental results doesn’t mean that you have some sort of penalty at all; the main determinant of whether a url is in our main web index or in the supplemental index is PageRank. If you used to have pages in our main web index and now they’re in the supplemental results, a good hypothesis is that we might not be counting links to your pages with the same weight as we have in the past. The approach I’d recommend in that case is to use solid white-hat SEO to get high-quality links (e.g. editorially given by other sites on the basis of merit). </QUOTE>
