.co.uk is more accepted as it's been around the longest. However, over the coming years, I'd expect .uk to replace .co.uk as the most popular domain simply because it's shorter.
Buy both domains and forward the .co.uk to the .uk or vice versa and cover both bases.

Thank you for reply Doollally.
.co.uk is not available, so if I want to see if .uk domains is good.
I don't know if the not-available co.uk is developed, but if not, ask yourself how much it will bother you if it will become active in the future.

Hi,
If the co.uk is not available, then you won't be able to purchase the .uk as the .co.uk owner has the rights to the domain for 5 years, even if they don't use it.

Essentially correct but not 100% - depends on when the .co.uk was registered....and I believe also if it dropped and got reregistered. I believe if there is a change of owner, then the .uk rights expire with the previous owner.
All pretty much irrelevant...if you want the .uk just check here if there is a .co.uk that owns the rights...

If it returns no results then you can register the .uk
MMM's point about whether there is already a developed site on the .co.uk is a good one. If there is the sensible approach would probably be to forget it.
As far as ranking goes - just one example but I built a site on a .uk which ranked page 1 for a number of pages (incl home) within a couple of weeks (and stayed there)

I don't think it makes a difference. That being said, *.uk domains are better than generic ones like .com, .net, etc if you're targeting UK leads.
Go to Google.co.uk
find a .uk domain name ranking in the top 10... if that doesnt answer your question. then i dont know.
It's irrelevant. The only reason for this is because of the volume of co.uk's compared to .uk...and of course most .co.uks will have an age advantage.
There is no reason a .uk can't rank as well as a .co.uk, other than all the other reasons why newer sites have to overcome established ones.
