I have made many tests and I can say for sure that density matters. Especially on the first screen of your page, this content will see your user first and I think that google pay more attention to the first paragraph. So if we are talking about the content:

    - Title
    - H1
    - First paragraph with your main keywords is very important

and then the structure of your landing. Basic rule, just look at the top websites, count how many h2, h3 tags they use. How many words totally do they have and you will know what to do.

off course, if content content looks like spam, Google will reduce this content in Search Results, so you should be careful with keywords. Try to add them in headers. And also use LSI keywords (

    That's important.
However, content with an unnaturally high keyword density will not be evaluated.

I think it's good to diversify keywords naturally.

Keywords density doesn't matter nowadays. And if you read more, google is working with entities and NLP (natural language processing).
I've seen websites ranking for keywords without mentioning those keywords a single time.

If you adjust the keyword appearance rate incorrectly, it will be difficult to be evaluated by Google.
Specifically, if you overstuff specific target keywords in a web page, the sentences will become difficult to read, impairing user convenience, and there is a high possibility that you will be penalized by Google for keyword stuffing.

It is a factor, but agree with other comments that KW's shouldn't be forced. Of course, depends on the KW set you're targeting as some are a bit trickier than others to but there should naturally be enough mentions in good copy. Word count is also becoming less important for rankings with less sometimes meaning more!

What about meta keywords? Do they help or do search engines ignore them?

I will be radical about this since i have experienced the unexpected(could not believe also). I posted 1000 word post having only 1 keyword(not counting keywords in titles) and ranked in 1st page. I think its because post covers most of the releted topics/keywords also.

So, I think topical coverage is the most important
