Today, Judge Carol E. Jackson of the Missouri Eastern District Court, after reviewing numerous letters for leniency and testimony at the hearing, sentenced David Carruthers to 33 months in federal prison. Today’s announcement follows the court’s acceptance of a plea agreement between Carruthers and federal prosecutors yesterday.

I can't believe they are not going to count all that time they held him.

    I just posted this....

Carruthers sentenced to 33 months in prison

    8 January 2010
    By Vin Narayanan

Former BetOnSports CEO David Carruthers was sentenced Friday to 33 months in prison for racketeering conspiracy related to BetOnSports accepting sports bets from American residents over the phone and Internet.

Carruthers is a British citizen and became the CEO of BetOnSports in 2000. He was arrested in July of 2006 by FBI agents at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Carruthers was traveling from the U.K. to Costa Rica and his flight had a layover in Dallas. BetOnSports stopped operating shortly after that and has not been able to repay its customers over $16 million.

BetOnSports founder Gary Kaplan was sentenced in November to 51 months in prison for his role in founding and operating BetOnSports.

"The prosecution and conviction of Carruthers is significant to the Government's efforts at enforcement of U.S. laws against offshore internet and telephone sports wagering businesses, because Carruthers was both a foreign national and a top executive of BetOnSports", said Assistant United States Attorney Steven Holtshouser. "Previously, executives, owners and investors believed that they were immune from the reach of U.S. law enforcement; even their business plans were directly aimed at the U.S. market. Both the conviction of and sentence handed down against Mr. Carruthers should send a message to any foreign business conducting illegal activities in the United States, that geography does not render it untouchable."

"Illegal internet gaming operations continue to be areas of concern for IRS," added Toni Weirauch, Special Agent in Charge of IRS-Criminal Investigation. "With our law enforcement partners, IRS will continue to play an enforcement role in the illegal gaming industry and other illegal offshore activity."

Carruthers had reached a plea deal in April, but withdrew his guilty plea in September days before he was due to be sentenced. He then pleaded guilty again under a new agreement in October.

Strange how he pleaded not guilty then guilty again and still got 33 months. I'd have thought a better deal would have been cut.

Seems like a hell of a long time! Does the time in his hotel room count towards the 33 months?

I have to say that is just sick almost 3 years inside, plus a couple of years in a hotel room just for being the City yes man for Gary.

The sad thing is that he has nothing to show for his time, flash cars property, i hope he writes a book he will need to.

It's too bad that after 3 1/2 years of being under house arrest he gets 3 more,

    BUT
He's the man who repeatedly, publicly, challenged the US government to stop him. Long before he was arrested, i told people that he was putting a huge target on his back. Don't challenge the US government to arrest you, they will.

The worst part, in my mind, is how his employers fired/abandoned him because he was arrested, for working for them. They acted as if he was arrested for something unrelated to the duties of the job. Those folks are the scumbags in my mind.

AmCan easy on your final point you are talking about a very good friend of mine, the company was a public traded company they had to distance themselves from it, the same "scumbags" then worked and travelled for BOS for the next 8 month from their own pocket trying to get as much money as possbile back to pay staff affiliates players ect.

Are they taking into account time served?

Otherwise he could be serving a longer sentence than someone who committed murder.
