My move would be to take it to some lab. Doesn't help, new one and hopefully the hard drive is ok to transfer the data.

Most likely cracked the motherboard, pull the hd or hd's and take it to a shop like others have said.

Consider trying to find the same laptop, like on eBay possibly and plug the drives back in, fix the license and boom, back up the way you were within days.

Also, before you give up completely, does it sound like it is powering on and just no display? (I know you said no power, so the original though is it cracked near the power source plug where the board gets the power not the charger).

Or maybe you get to choose a new upgrade you didn't know you were getting.

I'm sorry about your trouble, chaumi. I would take it to a computer repair shop and have them check it out for you. It sounds like you might have knocked out the power source somehow and that might be the only thing that needs to be replaced I'm guessing, since you said it won't even turn on anymore. I hope you've made a backup of everything.

Yeah it does look like the power feed where it comes in to the board. Last backup about 3 weeks ago...but the amount of work/useful stuff stored that's gone on since then is scary to even think about.

Callout IT man coming tomorrow, fingers crossed.

I read the thread title and had a mini heart attack. Probably not too comforting, but glad to see it's just the laptop

Sorry Paul, yes it was an ill-considered post title.

Got me thinking though about what would happen if anyone 'doing' SEO did have that misfortune...and there's a potential answer.....become an expert in voice search. Something we all might have to get a handle on ultimately.

As long as your hard disk(s) are ok then you should be able to recover the information.

If you don't already do so, you might want to think about using something like dropbox to store your important data. you can hold the data locally and everytime you update it, it gets copied to the cloud and any other devices you have conneccted to the dropbox account. That way you'll never lose your data, and can get back past versions with ease, even if you delete something.

Virtually any computer repair shop will be able to get your data from the hard drive if it wasn't physically broken.

Glad it wasn't an actual arm!

Putting your absolute most important data that you can not afford to lose, in someone else's hands, and trusting the security of that data to them?

Flash drives, thumb drives, external drives, 2nd computers with extra drive space, are ALL cheap enough you can have multiple copies, and you always know where they are, and if they are not connected to the net, only YOU have access to them.

I think there is a significant difference between business sensitive data and data that is really important to you and your business, but is not that sensitive. You should take appropriate action to protect both.

For example - I've been working on a new review for my site - i've spent 3 days working on it on my laptop, creating images, text, contect etc etc. I'm saving it locally and my hard disk goes down. I've lost the lot - 3 days down the drain. If I had dropbox installed - everytime i save the doc it would have automatically gone to the cloud. Is the data business sensitive? - no. Is it a right pain to lose it - yes? Will it be in the public domain when published - yes. So i choose to use Dropbox to hold such data - it protects my business and effort with no risk to my business.

Good advice. I'd advocate whatever you decide to do to make it automatic, so you never have to worry about running a backup or doing a special save. - becasue quite often you won't do it for loads of different reasons. Dropbox or something similar is only one type of sould. You may need a few things in place to protect yourself - just analyse what you have, what the impact of losing it would be to you and pick a solution that protects you.

Yes, there have been a number of similar dog/cat incidents here over the years, DS.

Funny how seemingly innocuous activities can sometimes generate a disproportionate end result, and how a few seconds of uncautious thinking can have some heavy penalties (says the bloke that reversed the van off the drive into an Alfa Romeo last weekend....it wasn't a good week...and yes, Pickle Dog did have some 'involvement' in that too!...it's a long story...and definitely won't help the insurance mess!)

Yeah exactly. Briefs, content, images, logos etc.. can all be stored in dropbox (or whatever) without worry.
