I was watching the show scorpion based on the life of Walter O Brien, and they made a comment "Luck Doesn't Exist, Good Science and Math Do".

I found this interesting and was wondering what you guys think. I think there is an element of "dumb luck" what do you guys think?

It's "dumb luck" if you don't understand the situation - it's "maths and science" if you ARE aware of what's happening.

Another related quote I like goes something like :

Things happen for no reason. But is it luck when something good happens to you? Yes it is. For example, not dying in a plane crash because you missed the flight is dumb luck.

Luck does exist (in a sense that random things will happen to you), and those who are aware of it are more likely to take advantage of the opportunities it brings. Business is just one example. But you can't get any luckier by wearing your lucky socks.

Last weekend Major winner Martin Kaymer inexplicably let a 10-shot lead go on the final round at his most prolific course, Abu Dhabi.

From the comments I saw on social media, most punters who had backed him (and there were plenty) were blaming their bad luck. Others who'd backed him then laid him at 1.01 on the exchanges weren't complaining about their luck, instead they were patting themselves on the back for their good judgement (read 'science and math' if you like). In that respect, I agree with the original quote.

From a players perspective slot machines may seem to be pure luck but from the designers perspective it is pure math. A progressive jackpot is designed to be won and sooner or later some player will win it. You would feel lucky if it were you.

You could also thank your "lucky stars" that a particular ancestor of yours was not eaten by a lion or else you might not be reading this today.
