Men and women gamble differently, study says

Women gamble to be social, while men take on high-risk bets for the challenge of beating the house, according to a recenty study by Brock University in Canada.

"Men like to show their masculinity. Gambling is a way of demonstrating masculinity with some sort of game of skill, so they believe they have some sort of control," (said researcher Heather Chalmers).

"Women tend to engage in activities that are less skill-oriented such as bingo, lotteries and slot machines."

And then this interesting note ...

The men were more likely to wager prized possessions, company shares, cigarettes, drugs and sexual favours.

"I had heard that males were betting their girlfriends, so we included sexual favours as one of the potential things you could wager," she said.

Well the article and stats are over 11 years old and trends do change.

Women definitely don't gamble to be social, at least not the majority of them. I see a good number of them putting "Reserved" signs on 2 or 3 slot machines so that no one else can play them while they spend a few minutes at each one trying to hit the jackpot

I've seen that men tend to gamble and bet on football, horse racing and sports related games more, while women like to bet on and play a game of roulette and the poker machines along with similar games.
