Mila de Waal suffers from systemic Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis( sJIA). sJIA is a rare but devastating form of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis which causes joint inflammation with systemic involvement. The systemic involvement causes fever, swollen glands and a skin rash and can also affect other organs such as the lungs, heart and liver. Children with uncontrolled sJIA not only develop long term complications such as aggressive joint destruction, growth failure, osteoporosis. If poorly controlled the disease can have fatal consequences.

Mila was diagnosed in November 2010 by because of difficulty in controlling her symptoms despite high doses of prednisone. Prolonged steroid use for a child like Mila is very undesirable, as the complications in a growing child can be devastating. She was started on a biologic treatment and initially responded well but unfortunately she suffered a severe infusion reaction and the drug had to be stopped. Unfortunately Mila suffered a dramatic flare of symptoms, her arthritis worsened and fever returned.

In June 2011we decided to import a more different kind of biologic therapy (Anakinra) from Germany which has been shown to be safe and effective in sJIA. Fortunately, this has resulted in a dramatic improvement in her condition, with immediate symptomatic relief in terms of arthritis and fever. She is now a happy, normal little girl full of energy and smiles and with no signs of disease activity. The medication is extremely expensive and not yet registered in South Africa, and her medical aid refuses to cover the costs.

I would appeal to you to make a contribution to covering the cost medication for this young girl.
