I was hoping to have a bit of a discussion to see other's thoughts on the mind of a searcher. I started this thread here so I didn't derail the other one that is of a different subject.

The question in the other thread had to do with picking between two domain names. Let's let that discussion there, but I wanted to delve a bit deeper into how many searchers form their query. (this has nothing to do with a specific engine really but is more of what a search will type into the query box)

So as not to derail that thread, I will propose a new scenario.

Let's say I am considering buying a car. (aint gonna happen the way conversions have been lately...)

So, as a searcher will I look for:

Car dealers in Orlando
Orlando Car Dealers

You know....mebbe this is worthy of a poll....

I also tend to search in a mix of natural language and keywords.

For your example I wouldn't be anywhere near the same searches you suggested - as I've learned that generic descriptions do not get the results required. So I'd include the brnad or any specifics I had decided.

So if I wanted to buy a Jaguar s-type car in new Zealand from a dealer ... then I'd type something like :
- buy jaguar s-type 2008 zealand dealer

It's not quite natural language as I've learned that the little words like "a" "from" "to" etc don't work well - and the "new" in New zealand nearly always puts up false flags.

so for your query I'd be ... Buy Jaguar s-type Orlando dealer

I would type in orlando car dealer. as in the singular as I'd only be able to view 1 dealer ship at a time

In todays economy and after a reality check my search would have to be:

Orlando Car dealers that have car's like THE_Cpa has (he posted a pic a few years ago.....)

I would also be more specific, so if I wanted a particular make of car I would search:

Mercedes london

etc...

I would search for:

Best car dealers in Orlando or top car dealers in Orlando. I would also try to find forums where happy or unhappy buyers make comments.

I'd search for "Orlando Car Dealers." I tend to always put the geographical area/location first as I think I get a more honed search result.

I would search the car model "Pinto Dealers Orlando"

I have noticed that I tend to put the city after whatever I'm searching for.

Just like the human mind is unique, we all search differently too.....

Certainly giving me some insight into keyword research.....

....Ok enough of the boring businesslike posting that forces me to learn stuff....I'm off to read the fun thread to get back on track.....

Great thread there! I would go for Orlando Car Dealers... but thats only if I didn't know which car I wanted, If I know the exact car then I would obviously go straight to it on the search "Orlando Fiatt Ritmo 88" something like that!

I don't think you will get an objective answer here. I mean, we're all more or less internet-pros, unlike the majority of searchers. They are far less aware of the influence and possibilities of using specific search terms and characters. They don't think about the best way to search, they just type one or two very general terms. Just my 2 cents though.

Good point, but I think over time and if we get enough input these kinds of threads do help us understand the searcher better.

I often will quiz everyday people (clients, friends and family) with the same kinds of questions when I am considering keyword research etc...

Imho a very wise thing to do. I didn't think of this in the past, but when I asked some people and watched them using my site, it gave me rather suprising and unexpected insights.

Yea I remember the first crappy front page site I built so many years ago.....omg don't be mean it was probably 1997 or 98...I asked my mom to sit down and go through it and she had trouble finding stuff, and based upon her answers I knew what had to be changed....

I knew from that point on that asking that asking others these types of situatopns were good ways to get insight.

Based on some research that the majority of AdSense clicks are made by ... well not very experienced users, I would assume that there are tons of people out there.

For example my father is 56 and if he would search he would most likely type it as a sentence : Where can I find cars in Orlando?

Me on the other hand would type "Car Dealers + Orlando".

What's interesting is that if you type those two you would see different Google Maps with red dots (car dealerships). Some show up on the first keyword some don't on the second.

And that's just the guy point of view. What about women? I expect something like Car Dealers with Pretty Cars in Orlando (just kidding).

I wouldn't be looking for car dealer sites, I would be looking for a site that lists cars from all the dealers, but that's probably because I'm used to autotrader.co.uk

If that doesn't exist in Florida, then it needs building

Actually I think Autotrader started in FL if I am not mistaken. Way back before the internet.
