    Default Mobile-first indexing at Google

According to a post on the Google Webmaster Central Blog, the search engine giant is "experimenting" with ranking mobile websites ahead of desktop-based platforms as part of a "wider initiative to update its indexing and ranking algorithm."

Although our search index will continue to be a single index of websites and apps, our algorithms will eventually primarily use the mobile version of a site’s content to rank pages from that site, to understand structured data, and to show snippets from those pages in our results. Of course, while our index will be built from mobile documents, we're going to continue to build a great search experience for all users, whether they come from mobile or desktop devices.

We understand this is an important shift in our indexing and it’s one we take seriously. We’ll continue to carefully experiment over the coming months on a small scale and we’ll ramp up this change when we’re confident that we have a great user experience. Though we’re only beginning this process, here are a few recommendations to help webmasters prepare as we move towards a more mobile-focused index.

According to my tech guys, we are already seeing some benefits.
It can be true: the site is designed with "mobile-core" in mind.

This is annoying. We don't optimize for mobile because the majority of rooms we represent don't offer mobile products. Those that do, the clients we've gotten were the lowest of quality. So now, we're going to lose traffic for desktop users, who we target, and who play on their desktops. Damn. Not looking forward to a mobile upgrade headache just to stay competitive in the serps.
