North Carolina faces Tennessee as a favorite in the Music City Bowl but the Volunteers could be the smart play here. Tennessee got off to a rocky (sorry) start to the season – the Vols were 2-6 by Halloween, and some of those six defeats were serious whippings – 48-13 to Oregon at home, 41-14 at Georgia, 41-10 to Alabama at home.
But then the Volunteers pulled themselves together to win their four last straight – a softer schedule helped, of course, but it is still four straight wins. 6-6 isn’t a bad record for an SEC team with a new head coach, especially one who took over in circumstances as acrimonious as those caused by Lane Kiffin’s exit.
North Carolina’s season has been under a cloud all year as the NCAA investigated violations in benefits and suspended players. The Tar Heels are a respectable 7-5, 4-4 in the ACC, but the SEC experience and the recent winning streak gives the Vols the edge. Tennessee +2 against North Carolina with Sports Interaction is the pick.
Notre Dame and Miami aren’t the national powerhouses that they were, but nobody with a heart or an interest in College Football will be able to look away when the Fighting Irish take on the Hurricanes in the Sun Bowl as old memories stir once more. Miami is the favorite but all the momentum is with the Irish.
Notre Dame was strong down the stretch as the defense tightened up but Miami fell apart, losing to both Virginia Tech and South Florida. Miami then fired head coach Randy Shannon and, even though Al Golden has been named Shannon’s successor, offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland is expected to call the plays at El Paso. It’s a lot to ask Miami to not only win, but to lay points as well. Notre Dame +3 against Miami with Sports Interaction is the pick.
South Carolina is favored by three points at the Chick-fil-A Bowl but the last time the Gamecocks were in Atlanta they were destroyed by Cam Newton and Auburn 56-17. That’s not likely to be an issue though – South Carolina has had its best year under Steve Spurrier this year, and Spurrier’s had his best year since he left Gainesville. Jimbo Fisher had a good first year in charge at Florida State but the SEC experience gives the Gamecocks the edge. South Carolina -3 against Florida State with Sports Interaction is the pick.
