The Daily Herald is a newspaper serving suburban Chicago. And yesterday, they had a reasonably good piece on the politics surrounding the push for online gambling in Illinois. The link to the story is below.
Towards the end of the piece, the newspaper includes quotes from the head of the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Buzzy has pulled them out for you to read.
This isn't the first time Burnett has talked about how hard it is to regulate online gaming. In fact, his official position seems to be "This is really hard to do.""It's been a very hard, technical process," said Nevada Gaming Control Board Chairman A.G. Burnett.
He said about 10 operators should go online later this year. The state took years to work on the regulations and sent staff overseas to see how Europe handles it.
"The regulations alone don't cut it," Burnett said. "You've got to have your staff up to speed."
And Buzzy is starting to think this more a political position than that regulating online gaming is actually hard to do.
Several countries and jurisdictions have already figured out the technical considerations for regulating online gaming. Nevada isn't reinventing the wheel here. But Nevada regulators constantly saying this is so hard to do and you better be ready to handle this are starting to sound a little self serving.
Nevada wants to be the sole regulator of online gaming the U.S. So it's in their best interests to convince people that this is a difficult endeavor and its best to leave it in the hands of Nevada.
Do you need the proper resources and knowledge to regulate online gaming? Yes. But that's true of any regulatory endeavor.
Buzzy is sick and tired of hearing Nevada explain how hard it is to regulate online gaming. It isn't that hard, Nevada. You just want it all for yourself.
