so no stats program can see the referring keyword from the https version.
Right, and all the bullshit lies they told the public about why they switched to https was just rehetoric.

I agree, and what Google is hoping that everyone forgets, is the it was webmasters, and the exploding seo industry that helped push Google to the heights they achieved.

As I said in the other thread a week or two ago, where I knew something like this was coming (I knew they did not switch to https for altruistic reasons) they studied what webmasters were doing, they studied and talked to seo people, and did in fact work hard to create an algo that provided good results, but that DAMN little green bar was all that seo's could see, think about and talk about for so damn long that it helped push Google to a top position that no one, even deep pocketed Microsoft could knock them down from since ONLY google had the green bar, and seo's could see results and changes very quickly because of it.

In some cases, even when sites did very well in other engines, all seo's could talk about was Google because they knew they could minipulate (and take credit for) the little green bar and show clients tangible results very quickly.

We were all part of that, now look what we did, and now that we all helped them get there, they are making changes for themselves and don't care what happens to anyone on the web. Pay, or make room for someone who will. (kinda feels like being dropped from an affiliate program without warning)

Although I must admit to enjoying a good bit of Google bashing, if I must play devil's advocate for a second, I would say that all it boils down to is that Google has a monopoly hold of the search engine market. Which as everyone knows is simply the result of everyone using Google. I realise that that is stating the obvious; however, if we all started using Bing then they would enjoy that position of power. Considering how much Microsoft (particularly during the 90's) abuse their monopolist position, when charging extortionate amounts of money for their products, I am not entirely convinced that everyone using Bing would bring much joy.

So my solution is that we use Google Monday to Wednesday, Bing Thursday to Saturday, and Sundays will be the sacred day of Yahoo!!!!!

A quote from Scottish philosopher, politician and economist Adam Smith:

The monopolists, by keeping the market constantly under-stocked, by never fully supplying the effectual demand, sell their commodities much above the natural price, and raise their emoluments, whether they consist in wages or profit, greatly above their natural rate.

Well I agree with the fact that many of us enjoy a bit of Google bashing at times, but I disagree with the Microsoft statements 100% since much of that and the artcicles that tried to convince the world they were true were born of Microsoft Bashing. (You can't bundle IE in Windows even though you own both products and one is free)

That is simialr to (You can't restrict me from viewing my own stats as to what keywords someone found my website, since I own the website, my web server, the stats on my webserver, and the traffic that comes to it....unless of course I pay you MONTHLY 3 times the average salary a US man makes per year)

Yep, Microsoft is the big bully and Google isn't.

I can second this. I have also heard that paying the 150k still does not get you the keywords.

Google makes everything to make search easier, more accurate, faster and so on to attract more users at the same time it creates difficulties for webmasters and it's getting more complicated to survive.
But webmasters don't have choice as everyone uses Google. If you want to earn money you should be ranked in Google.

Webmaster DO have a choice, and Google needs to understand (although they do NOT want to admit it) that webmasters help make Google and put tem on the undeserved pedastal they are on and can knock them off of it (though not as easily).

For those that want to sit back and just say we can not do anything about it, time will tell.

I wish they'd go after Google for monopoly like they used to go after Microsoft. Have you seen the Internship? It's like a giant Google commercial, turned into a comedy but trying to brainwash people that everything Google does is for the good of humanity .

I will put myself to the challenge and will switch my homepage from Google to Bing for a week and see what happens.

As much as I would like to bash Google, I am a big admirer or their products. I use an android phone & tablet, nearly all of Googles products (keep, maps, chrome, calendar, WMT, analytics, Google play etc) I would have a chrome book but you are pretty limited to what you can do on it.

I would guess for most of us at least 70%+ of our traffic comes from Google and for this I am grateful. They may harbour all of our data, track our moves, sell on info etc but they generate us a decent income.

They tried on a state level but google won. I do not remember which state it was. The challenge is IMO that they have the best information. There was a thread on here about nsa targeting peoples emails, IM, ext..

I actually switched a number of my home pages to Bing and often start many of my searches there.

They have improved their results a bit I must say. I really used to never understand why google could find stuff in Microsoft's knowledge base more efficiently then Microsoft could do, but that has seemed to change some and Bing does a much better job of that now.

I still find myself using google a lot too, but I am using Bing a lot more now than I did even 3 months ago.

I also kinda like the way theyhave a nice fresh image every day of a city, animal or whatever, but it can be a timewaster too. You follow one of the links because it was a cool picture and the next thing you know it's an hour or so later and your are reading about some exotic animal you never knew existed lol.

I see. Well I am sure none of use deny the fact that Google has good products, but they can twist hands now cause of the monopoly. "Here look at your keywords. Now you can't we take em away and want 150k for them". Nowdays the ads can be what 3-4 on top of the rank 1. Who says they won't change that to like 10 ads before the ranked 1.

Monopoly is bad for everyone, except the one that holds it. And as I believe Google's results do not represent the actual ones, I'll just give it a rest for some time. Doubt one person makes a difference, but it has to start from somewhere.

I wanted to chime in a say that Bing landings have been on the steady increase in my U.S.A. casino sites across the board. More people are using it I think as it is the default search for Siri. When my iPad 3 needs a stern talking to Bing comes back with some random answers.

personally this does not come as a big deal, since the vast majority of keywords was blocked by security settings. You could see a trend, but not entirely helpful. Sure, it`s bad news, but not disastrous.
