Have you embraced Gutenberg?

Now that Gutenberg has been out for awhile, where do you stand with it?

Personally, we installed the classic editor immediately and went about business as usual. A few months ago we began experimenting with Gutenberg and started uninstalling the classic editor. Now that we are used to it - I'd say we love it and have converted 100% as of the turn of the year.

I absolutely love it. To think, just a few years ago, you would need web dev for most back end work, now with Gutenberg, its more like 2%.

I installed classic editor and have just kept using it. Change is always hard and I have been lazy I guess trying to use to it. So what have you found in Gutenberg that you like so much? I am sure I am missing out on some nice new features.

The blocks are amazing, everything is at hand. It's intuitive, suggesting your favourite and most used blocks.

I hate it. Very tedious and time-consuming way of composing Page/Post content.

I can barely deal with the fact that there isn't a proper html editor in wordpress, let alone mucking about with blocks.

Gutenberg is good if you're simply writing a normal blog post. A fantastic improvement over the Classic Editor, as those people who aren't techy can now easily add more complex stuff to the post. Up until now they basically could only add font color.

But if you're a power user then it's not for you as it doesn't function well on pages that are to be a mix of Wordpress content and custom code. I usually just install Classic Editor right away and set it to default for all new posts.

Of course, if you want more control over your actual page and want to create layouts, boxes, etc., then again Gutenberg is no good as you'll be using some page builder.

I resisted the Gutenberg editor for a while too but recently discovered that it compliments a well designed theme that has custom fields and page/post templates. My favourite block is the "Re-useable block" which unleashes a lot of interesting possibilities.

I ditched it straight away.. so restrictive i think its great for those that want easy to use but those of us that like to modify a lot it's not so great, and when creating hundreds of pages its slow

Unlike us old timers mate, who, were all coders, these days, most aren't. Some affiliates can't even do the very basic of html/php/css changes.

WP unfortunately has changed direction. Instead, is now focused on meeting the needs of non-coders. That's progress. However, to provide that level of interactive functionality and design, comes at a cost. EG - more code, which leads to more mistakes and unforeseen vulnerabilities etc.

Think back to 95, 98, XP and even Win7... All these OS's could be easily streamlined/optimised. Win8 and Win 10 (while they have some great features) the ability to get into the nuts and bolts to remove unwanted cr#p, is mostly a PITA.

MMM asked a question last week about the benefits of having a bespoke developed site, compared to using WP. That actually got me thinking. WP is good for certain uses BUT not so great for others. Especially if your not using the blog.

So for the last couple of days, I've been fiddling around with Dreamweaver 2020. Last copy of Dreamweaver I owned was DW8 (US$750 or so).

The latest version has bootstrap and other much needed coding/tools, which can really speed up dev. Plus, they now have monthly/yearly subscriptions, instead of a 1-time charge. That, and DW2020 is on their cloud!

Now deciding whether to ditch a current WP dev, in favour of developing a bespoke solution, for a new upcoming site.

It would certainly be a lot faster (speed wise) than WP, with an untold amount of less bloated coding, and vulnerabilities akin to WP/plugins etc. Not to mention, I can code till my hearts content...

But best of all, wouldn't have to deal with Gutenberg... Even though I have DIVI, those blocks etc., are still frustrating!

NB - as a side issue, can break out of the usually WP cookie cutter BS, that anyone who doesn't code, seems glued-to with, WP gambling themes.

For dumb fkcus like me, who don't know much coding besides basic html and css, I think Gutenberg is great. I certainly do not find posting lengthy articles anymore time consuming than before. I find using Gutenberg gives me much more control over the styling and features I can add to a page/post than before, so I love it.

Gutenberg is a different beast now compared to when it was first released.

I've always used the classic editor. the interface is very useful. I've seen the updates, but it's hard to switch to them yet. maybe in the future

To be honest, I don't really like it. As someone said, I install a Classic Editor for all new posts.

Gutenberg has been great. It's very easy to use and you can basically do more with your site than when you're using the classic editor.

The classic editor doesn't give a non-coder, much scope, if any.

So, I can understand people without those skill-sets, favouring Gutenberg, as it's pretty much a WYSIWYG page builder.

Reiterating, I even purchased DIVI, which, is a million times more organized than the stock-standard Gutenburg tools. But even with DIVI, I have a hard using it. It's not from lack of perseverance - I've watched numerous videos.

I just find it far easier (simpler) to use the txt tab (classic), and add whatever div layouts (columns, shortcodes etc) that I need, then wrap all that together using custom CSS.

At the end of the day, what works best is... what is relative to each person.
