    Lightbulb Opening new website

Hi everyone! I am in the process of opening an affiliate website, I have done a good amount of research on 3rd party tools, Website research, GEOS, SEOS etc (never enough research obviously) What I'm really stuck on is, how to actually start? What are the first step to take? it would be really helpful if anyone can give me a few tips on this. Should I start by building my website? or choosing geos? or setting up banner ads etc? Thanks in advance guys.

In my opinion, you are not started until you start, so build the site.

I think you can't really build the site until you decide what geo to target, since that will determine what operators you will promote and the content of your content. If you plan on targeting the UK, and promoting properties that serve that market, writing about stuff in South America or Canada, (except in cases where an operator might be promoted on both of those countries).

You asked in setting up banner ads should be first, without a site and without a decision of the other points, there is nothing to obviously target otherwise.

"I have done a good amount of research on 3rd party tools, Website research, GEOS, SEOS etc"

The way this is written suggests it's kind of high level 'how websites work' type research you've done.

I'll assume you're asking here because it's a gambling-themed website you want to create, although theoretically it doesn't really matter because many principles are the same whatever the target subject.

So, the start is having an idea about what you want to target (subject, geo, etc).
You (ideally) need to have some experience with/interest in that subject. If you don't, you can still do it. But it will be n times harder.
The subject has to be one that's worth pursuing (so, in gambling, that brings in lots of variables)

If you have a subject in mind and believe you have the skills/knowledge/drive/money (delete or add to as applicable) to see it through, then a way you can approach it is:

Take your subject and think about it - if you know it well enough this can be just 'thinking', if you don't then you will need tools to help (and tools will help even if you do know it).

Map out on a spreadsheet/big whiteboard every aspect of it you can think of that would mean (if you built a site covering all those associated topics) that your site would be a highly valuable resource for that subject...and within it, all of the topics you cover can be intuitively/sensibly/appropriately interlinked with each other such that they build a picture of authority around your subject.

Now you have all of your targets around which you need to create pages/content (you're unlikely to think of everything but the target is to get the structure right so you have at least covered all the main topics, and in a way that best helps you add other topics as you realize they are important/relevant.

At this point, you have a choice. Start creating the content for those pages (in docs, etc)...or jump to site-building and try to gradually build up the site as you go with it actually being live.

I'd suggest that your best way is to identify the absolutely critical main pages you need to have, create the content for those offline, then you have everything (kind of) you need to at least create some sort of valuable starting site (it probably won't be 'valuable'...but it might be 'valuable' enough to get indexed).

Now you are at the true initial build phase. Hopefully, the already-completed research to this point has identified you need a domain name, (good enough) hosting, a (fast or fastish) theme...and the knowledge to bring all that together so it ends up with a working/navigable website.

Create the site. Build the pages you have already created content for.

Then come back here for next steps/a review of what you've done.

    ***********

All of the above is broadly put ofc....there are multiple nuances and variations in how you can handle it. But it might help get started.

Shout if anything specifically doesn't make sense or needs better explanation.

PS banners, affiliate deals, etc can all be covered down the road a little. You need to have the vehicle to carry them for them to be of any use...but of course, it's useful to have them in mind when you are building because they may shape what you actually build (in various ways).

Thank you so much for your informative reply! Took it for granted when I didn't mention that this will be a gambling affiliate website. I will keep on building the website for now then. I am just finding the right plug-ins, designs for layouts etc. Thanks again for your reply, Super happy to be apart of this forum as until up a few days ago, I had no idea that there was this type of site.

Wow speechless by your generosity. Don't know from where to start to thank you but this really helped giving me a push forward knowing I am going in the right direction. Yes it is indeed a gambling affiliate website, I am knowledgeable as I already work in the gaming sector. Definitely the next step is the spreadsheet and building content for the website. Thank you for also mentioning that some things can be done along the line. Yes I know about domain, web hosting etc but thanks for mentioning that point too. I truly did not expect this type of feedback from anyone! seriously thanks big time.

    Thankyou, Brooke

Decide on the geo first because this will influence what domain extension you should register.

It will be interesting to see what you can do, Brooke. Good luck. And be sure to ask if you're uncertain about anything, you can be sure someone here will always know the answer.

Hello, first determine the type of activity of your site, whether it will be, for example, online sporting goods store, or a larger corporate website or landing page. Geo-location and language is very important to promote the site. Unique content, interesting and useful information, the design of your site.

Definitely pick the right niche. If you go ultra competitive then it could take years to get good results whereas niche will get you something sooner than later.
