I am hearing the same thing along with some other stuff. Not sure if anyone noticed but Google has recently revamped their webmasters guidelines. Google will be taking a tougher stance regarding website relevancy.

The rule of thumb is being honest with your site and try to avoid tricks. Allow your site to grow naturally. Some of things google will be looking for as follows:

Keyword stuffing
Keyword content creators
Link farming
Cloaking and code swapping
Doorway pages
Shady marketing techniques
Content, relevancy, and title----more important than anything else for achieving a good ranking

Just mere speculation but I have a hunch many webmasters are going to be very angry when google is finished. Some of you are probably seeing the effects already.

The PR update will most likely be at the end of this month. I've been waiting for it. I don't think they'll drop the PR toolbar.

Remember for all practical purposes PR on the toolbar doesn't mean anything. The real PR is updated continually. It's weird because even though I know that, I still like to see the green.

I believe PR Update will happen soon and yes pretty soon.
This update is the second longest update been 116 days already, the logest update was 123 days back to nov 2005.

however i have heard google making some changes with their algo, and it might hurt some webmaster whoever rank on top pages on google.

after update we can figure out what exactly they changed. so keep waiting ...

I thought the PR update happened at the start of the month..... I gained 1 point on august the 2nd (I remember the date because it was my birthday!)

Also, another one of my sites lost 1 point at the start of this month.

at the end of the day remember, is not the PR it is the ranking you have in your targeted keywords.

It's not those who ank at the top of google that are going to be hurt. people who have built their website plainly for the search engines and not the user will be recogonized.

Your websites should be built for the readers...don't get me wrong I mean most of us who are trying with SEO to get our pages to rank better are of course looking at from the spider view as well. But I think if you r site still flows the way it should to both the reader and google you shouldnt be impacted quite as near.

don't stuff, don't spam, don't link to unrelated sites even if they are offering you a PR5+ ( not worth it)

Make sure your page title meta and h tags are all relevant with the page in question

Mix you links up. Use different anchor texts, buy them exchange them and also link to others without a reciprocal in return.

When linking to someone else check their neighbours. For example I had given a home page linka while back in return for a favor. Someone pointed out that this person was linking to directories....his link was quickly pulled after that. If the site you are linking to is clearly a link farm stop linking. It wont hurt you to be linked from said banner farm.......but it will hurt for you to link to them.

Best advice I have been given so far and mind you I am not an expert in this area but pay attention to alot of it. If it seems shady to you don't do it. If you cant be sure 100% that what you are doing is honest than stop.

I wish it would update I have some moving to do once it is finsihed. i don;t care about PR except it allows me a bit more control over links and right now I want to move some but need to wait and see if the internals are hitting it this round. They should be the links are there for it but we will have to see.
