Default Calm before the storm? Google mobile update

Last few days I have noticed traffic is down, though my major keywords still rank.. So Im going to assume it's the long tail.. Now usually I check indexing and there is a period where site indexing drops in the morning then by 9am EST it doubles "Usually with fresh content and better rankings" these last few days the index numbers seem stuck.. usually I would try and work out what the hold back is, But I have a feeling that this might be Mobile transition related?

On judgement day I will post my results with the new algorithm, I am expecting to nail some hard to reach 1st places that have me held in 8-9 positions.. I feel like a kid at Christmas..

I also do feel like a kid at Christmas or perhaps as a school kid waiting for his exam result having no idea if he made the test good or wasted it totally. My average traffic increased this week. I've got much less up and downs lately. Before I had days I had the double traffic of my average and days I had the half. Now it's almost every day around the average traffic. 21 april I will be watchting the stats the whole day I think.

Flat as a board... my traffic is holding the positions.
No changes. No increases or losses.
We will see... 3 days left.

I doubted a long time, but finally I made up my mind and ordered a bunch of SSL-certificates. It's announce as a factor that will play a more important role and I feel it will bring me more profit than buying some new articles or domain names.

You could of just setup a free cloudflare CDN, it gives you SSL protection free

    Hi Guys

Thanks for warning, my most used website is not much mobile friendly, but works on mobiles. There are some announcements in GW tools about mobile unusability for this site. This update means, that google will start to check the sites again for mobile usability starting 21, or it will just add this criterium to their algorythm?

If so, I will rather make sure, that before 21.4. all my mobile issues are removed, right?

And SSL will be a part of update? Cause of data about your visitors? (emails etc..)

I know it´s a lot of questions, but where else can I ask

As I've red and heard 21 april will be a major algorithm change. They will change the way that is determined if a website is mobile friendly or not. The mobile friendly algorithm change will have an impact heavier than Panda and Penguin updates. More than half of Google's traffic is mobile traffic, so I guess the impact will be heavy. They want websites that are having a good visability at either a mobile device, either a desktop.

The update will also increase the ranking of websites with SSL. SSL is already a factor, it will be a more important factor. I think it's because more and more payments are made on the net and there's more and more discussion about the safety of your data. I think for us, SSL is - besides for ranking - not so useful.

Yes, it´s a logical turn of events. So, it would be better to make a website fully mobile friendly and submit it in GWT as soon as possible.

    Thank you once more!!

Actualy it can be a great plus for websites fully responsive

BTW did you try this Popup plugin?

Yes and no. We don't know exactly it will be after 21 april, but ok... When I make a search at my desktop, it's not that important if a website is mobile friendly or not. So, for those searches the ranking of mobile friendly websites should not be increased and the ranking of those ***** are not, should not be decreased. Most ideal scenario is that websites are having good visability at all devices, but if i'm searching at my desktop, I don't care if websites are mobile friendly or not.

Same for SSL. If it's something like a online shop where you effectually are paying and giving your credit card details, it's very logic. But if your website is just like a travel guide to your hometown or something like that, I don't see why SSL should be required.

Not yet. The website where I have to pay does not have SSL :P Hehe, no. I saw the exit pop up is when some one uses the back function. I usually use the cross in the right top corner. I'm looking for a program that will let the popup appear on both.

I would prefer that Google acts against unethical behaviour. For some key words, first pages are really full of crap. Really. If I want to know something - let's say - medical, I don't even use Google anymore. Why? Because it's full of crap sites, made by SEO-boys that bought a bunch of backlinks and paid some students € 0,01 a word to write some SEO medical articles...

In Dutch I see with keyword "online casino" at the first page, pages that are clearly made with Google Translate or WP Robot. Every phrase is full of errors and it's 100.000 worser than my English or Chinese. If I search in English for top casino, I see a website at #1 where casino's that lied about their licenses and are know for seizing money of winning players at number 1...

    Just my cents

Most older sites non optmized dont get that much mobile traffic anyhow, I dont think its about how much traffic you are going to lose but more how much traffic you are going to lose out on, I already have 60 to sometimes 70% mobile traffic anyhow and regards to ssl, it is meant to be a ranking factor but i am yet to see it in action, and is ssl needed with a read only website?

I also agree that it will most likely be more important than ever to have a Mobile friendly / Responsive site. I do think the mobile market will in turn cause the gaming market to grow to new heights. So its more important that ever to be on Googles good sidee

Lets hope 4/21 helps us all

I saw a small drop in traffic the last 2 days, but that is probably the regularly glitch. It happens from time to time. My main sites are mobile friendly so everything should be the same or even better than before.

One of my big competitors didn't make his site mobile friendly. Let's hope this will give me some extra traffic after 4/21

Just curious how you expect to achieve such a major bump in rankings. Are you just thinking that the non-mobile websites will no longer rank for those keywords and as a result since your website is mobile friendly you will just move up?I think that is a good theory but I would have to think if any one is ranking in the top 3 for competitive keywords/phrases they will have their website ready for the mobile update. I hope Im wrong because I would like to pick up some spots myself.

As far as SSL, I have one website where I purchased an SSL but since I am not selling anything or collecting any type of customer data do I really need one? I know I dont "need" one, but do you think my rankings could improve if I had one? I just always assumed since I wasn't selling anything it should have no bearing on my rankings.

Oh yes! It`s getting worse and worse. Looking forward to seeing on the top positions 'mobile friendly' websites that actually can`t be read on mobile and / or worsen user experience, but have the proper coding for the algorithm.

Yep, good article. Seems that not having a mobile friendly website, won't affect your desktop traffic. That would be fair!

Competition for some of my big money keywords are non mobile.. Quite a lot.. and most of them are large authority sites, Which cannot just make their site responsive.. they need a complete redesign.. Im not sure if they are even worried about it, Logic would tell you that these sites should be optmized but most are not, I think the biggest gain will be for casino affiliates.. nearly most Casino aff pages are non mobile friendly so those that get in early might be able to build a decent player base.

I think the "04/21 update" will be not only "mobile friendly" related.
Just thinking... when was released the last Penguin update, i.e.?

    Again, we will see...
