Default Online Directories - help or hinder?

    Hi,

Does anybody have an experience with online directories actually help their ranking status?

Does anybody have a list of free gambling directories lying around? Gambling or slots...

    Thanks!

    Hilary

In the eyes of the search engine spiders, every page that links to your site that is from other site is considered a vote or backlink (rel="nofollow" attribute on the linking code halts the distribution of the link juices though), and a link coming from online directories is not excluded. But, of course, it would be a lot more beneficial if you can make it a bit more concentrated. I mean, links coming from online directories that are related to your site is a lot more better, or highly valuable, than links you acquire from general online directories. Of course, it is best to acquire links that are dofollow coming from them.

So to speak, links coming from online directories help ranking status, however it may take quite some time to observe the effect as link approval in online directories really is a serious long period process which can extend up to a month depending on the subscription taken and the number of active personnel behind those directories you submit links to.

    Default Experience with link directories

It really depends how its done and what directories we are talking about. I have submitted my site to a couple of highly relevant bingo directories that show up in Google Webmaster Tools as good inbound links from a site with highly relevant content (and domain name) so in this case it is great.

Then in my naivety I went down the road of paying an Indian company to submit my site to 1000 directories, which I thought would help with my ranking even if most of the directories were not that relevant and very generic directories. I waited a week and then saw my site drop in Google!!!

I learned a valuable lesson. Its not about the amount of links, its about the quality. So IMO unless we are talking about DMOZ or very specific directorys then you are better off without directory links.

Valuable link.....if you add yourself to these directories, make sure to space them out over time. Google in particular, does not like to see a mass increase of links all of a sudden. Also, be wary of the dodgy ones (PR 0). I wouldn't reciprocally link to any of them, for fear of linking to a "bad neighborhood".

Thank you for that link of directories.
I have bookmarked them to take a look later.

I have done some extensive directory submitting to relevant directories and have found it to be helpful in building backlinks.

I find that to be inaccurate.

I've always started my websites with directory submissions to 1000-1500 directories. It pretty much always gave it a mid-term boost to PR1 (by itself). I know PR doesn't matter as much as it used to, I'm giving it as an indication.

It mostly depends on the quality of the directories. Obviously if you submit to directories that are in bad SEO neighborhoods, it won't be beneficial.

If you submit to directories that have been around for a long time and are legitimate, it IS beneficial.

In the long term you definitively want better links though.

    Alex777,

I just kinda realized that this thread has taken 2 directions and I will therefore split the Directory Submission portion to the Links Exchange Forum.

Also, I got approved for your directory account, and was able to log in and submit a site.

I did notice that your mail server is failing a reverse dns chack for the mail server's ip address.

This means that any servers that block mail that fail this check will mark your emails as spam.

If you would like help working that issue out, contact me by pm, or start a thread in the tech forum and I'll be glad to help.

Directory submissions are worthless unless it's a quality directory such as yahoo, botw, where submissions are evaluated manually and not everyone can get in...I only submit to maybe 4 directories...the rest don't even matter.
