Page speed 829mm to 6 seconds and back

Does anybody know exactly why a speed test fluctuates so much? I have been working on making my site as fast as possible.

Sometimes I will do a test and see my page speed under 1 second ( example - http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/#!/d5Rl...picgambler.com ) while other times it gets right up there in the 2-6 second range.

Is this due to me being on a inexpensive shared hosting plan or is it something else?

This is most likely, as you suspect, because you are on a shared hosting plan.

The server you are on could be experiencing heavier traffic during those times you are seeing the slower speeds.

If email is on the same server, it could be mail traffic (incoming or outgoing), if mail is not on that server then it is likely just regular site traffic to you and other sites on the same server.

Your hosting plan is inexpensive for a reason. They try to put as much sites as possible on the same server to safe money. More expesive shared hostings will probably have better servers and put less websites on them. Of course you also have companies that ask more money for bad services. You should ask other people for their opinions. Or read some reviews on the internet to find a good hosting.

If you want a stable speed you should hire a (virtual) private server where you have your own resources. That way other websites can't influence your websites speed. But this is much more expensive than a shared hosting plan.

Always keep in mind that virtual hosting is (sort of) shared hosting also.

You get a Virtual Private Server, which is private to you, but it is NOT normally on it's own piece of equipment, but is on shared cloud space.

Depending on what the host runs for the cloud, this may be shared across many servers, or it may be a few virtuals on a server running something like Proxmox, VMWare, Citrix, Xen, Hyper-V, etc.

This is not always a bad thing, and many of the cloud server operating systems allow for additional resources to be allocated to a virtual when needed, but traffic on other virtuals can affect performance in some cases.

Speed basically depends on hosting but there are other factors like images/css are optimized or not, too much bad programming in scripts etc..

I would recommend testing your site with https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/
If the tool shows that you have optimized all your onsite stuff then I suppose your problem lies in the hosting provider. Simple as that!
