Police order block of gambling sites in Israel

Israeli police have instructed Internet service providers to block access to overseas online gambling Web sites, according to an article on Haaretz.co. This is the first time in Israel that ISPs have been instructed by police to block sites.

From the article:

Israel Police representatives visited every Israeli ISP over the past few days to personally deliver the directive.

The police handed the providers a list of overseas gambling sites and their IP (Internet protocol) addresses to be blocked. According to the police order, the sites "provide a place for illegal gaming for lotteries or gambling, as defined in Section 224 of the Penal Code."

There are loads of gaming companies in Israel. If they can't access either their own or their clients sites, I guess they're going to feel the pinch or go out of business.

If it was a case of the law being that way because they want the tax, I doubt it would be illegal for regular land based casinos in Israel which is currently the case.

Benitho - I imagine the reason the operators based in Israel don't take Israeli players is the same reason that public companies in Australia can't take Australian players.

As far as I was aware its illegal for the Average Joe to gamble in Israel, but it's not illegal to run a gambling business promoting to a player base outside Israel.

Somehow, it's illegal so it is blocked. Online gambling should be approved by the government in Israel.
