    Hey,

I created my first website with no budget, other than the money it took to pay for the domain, hosting and other similar things.
I haven't bought any guest posts, links, etc. until the website started to bring in some money. Once it has, I then used that money to promote it further.
Similar to you, I had a lot of spare hours I could put in, but no substantial financial resources.

So yes, it is possible to create an affiliate website and get it going without much financial input.

That said - the second website I created a bit later didn't get off the ground as easy. I am actually still trying to make it work, seeing some movement now, but it did take a while.

P.S. make sure to select the least competitive region, niche, brands etc. pretty much try going to all the low hanging fruit you can possibly identify. This may potentially allow you to make some initial gains quicker.

Yes, you can definitely make a successful site without putting up too much money. At the minimum you'll need funds for the domain and hosting, but if you're writing everything yourself then you can totally do the rest for free.

That doesn't mean you can do anything though, you won't be ranking for "online casinos" easily without a big link building budget an don't expect to be making millions overnight. But if you choose something more niche and write good quality useful articles then you should be able to make a site that delivers sign ups.

You can then reinvest that income into the site to grow it further. It'll take time though. And a bit more effort as you'll be doing everything yourself but doable if you have the drive.

You'll need links but there are ways other than paying for them.

OK, well it'll likely be easier in some languages than others.

But let's assume English, and target is any English speakers (though ofc you could narrow it to UK, USA, Canada, NZ etc etc)

As all above (but in a few more words).......

You'll win the lottery (jackpot) before you rank for 'online casino bonuses' 'best bitcoin casino' etc etc (perhaps even with deep pockets!)

So, a narrow target is what's needed (narrow enough that you can be competitive, carefully chosen so you can still grow and expand, something that has a future as a subject and as a source of income.....but still with potential to get reasonable traffic if you did manage to crack it).

The obvious approach is to identify that target and go for it by trying to find associated terms that have the least (or weakest) competition. Then just write about them and publish.

    But......

Just bear in mind that as a new site you have no authority, no trust. So, you may have to build that trust first, and before you start getting any real results. To build trust, you have to show expertise (and have some technical site stuff in place too - and likely some age). To show expertise, you have to prove it by covering your subject in depth/expertly. To cover your subject expertly, you will probably need to cover it at high level (ie with content you know will never rank, but it may still be important to show that you fully understand your subject and can represent that knowledge to visitors).

It all comes back round to choosing your target wisely. As a (wildish) example:

You decide that 'bonuses in virtual reality casinos' is your target....so you write a good page showing all the current bonuses.

If you don't also show that you understand everything about bonuses in general (on your site)....then your virtual reality bonuses page/site may never be credited with the trust level it might deserve. So, you have a page about types of bonuses, and then maybe individual pages about each type of bonus (none of which will rank most likely)...but they all help in building some authority around the subject of bonuses such that when you write about them for VR casinos specifically, it all carries some weight. And...they all give you opportunities for internal linking that gives you added weight. It's an overall demonstration of your expertise in that subject.

This is all where your first step comes in after choosing the target subject. Sit down, and think how you are going to represent that subject cleverly on a website and webpages. This is the structure of your site (or part of it).

Do all of this well, and the current evidence suggests you have some prospects of building some levels of success (without having to spend money on links...although you will, almost certainly, but maybe not necessarily, have to spend time on some linkbuilding). That time is going to be the time needed to identify suitable/practical opportunities (and also to learn how to identify them), and then act upon them. But linkbuilding is secondary anyway, without a (good) site and pages there is nothing to link to, so focus on that first.

Hoping to score loaves of bread? Unless you own a bakery these days, that's all but impossible.

However, crush a loaf of bread, and what do you have? Crumbs... Now some folks may say, crumbs are pretty useless. Maybe only having few crumbs are BUT a bagful of crumbs, that's a different story.

As others have said, target to low hanging fruit. Hence, establish long-tail keyword phrases. Don't know what they are, learn about them, put what you learn into practice. Eventually, enough long-tail keyword phrases (crumbs) will give you your loaves of bread

    Decent analogy Dave,

I agree that crumbs of bread are better then an empty bread box, and those crumbs can help keep you alive.
