My Russian traffic seems to be growing as my site gets older. I haven't built backlinks for it since I bought it though.

The biggest Russian search engine is Yandex and it's algorythms are different from those of Google, so you have to study them to suceed, but it's not a problem to rank high in Russian search engines.

Russia uses Yandex more than Google and optimising for both is the key. Yandex looks at inbound and outbound links just like Google except they also look as the information you used when you registered the site in the Yandex directory. They also look at Registartion information and the IP of the host - so host your site in Russia with a company like RoarHosting.com.

Also use your Longitude/Latitude metatag and if possible an address onsite which is in your target region.

Yandex also has its own version of Webmaster Central where you can go in and set your geographic target just like Google.

When you are building links go traditional and pick up a phone. The key here is to use a backlink analyser like Link Assistant, and also to use native language in your anchor text.
