Prohabition

Watching a very interesting series on Prohabition on PBS.

It made me curious on the parallels of the prohibition on alcohol in the 1920's to the prohibitions on gambling in the 2000's.

Back then, alcohol was consumed whole heartedly. One drinks when it's one o'clock, one drinks when it's 8 o'clock. Presidents drank when the sun came up. Abraham Lincoln sold whiskey. Doctors perscribed alcohol. Americans drank at every meal. Americans drank every day at work. Paychecks were spent. Children suffered. Women found themselves in danger. There were other horrors that I cannot mention. It wasn't only Americans.

Women didn't have the right to own a home, let alone speak on any such thing. The propaganda advised us that drinking caused spontanious combustion among other things.

Susan B Anthony formed a womens sufferage. The temperence movement and anti saloon league was formed. The anti saloon league did not oppose gambling btw.

The Constitution was changed for the first time ever. But that didn't work. Even clergy warned.The criminals became heroes. That compares to online gambing.

Raids began. The wars raged. The taxing began, what a disaster. Alcohol went underground. Again compare to our lawless but legitimate online gambling.

What I found was that passion wins, but industrialism can hold off that passion for years.

There is far to much to the story that I can post here but there is nothing simple about prohabition in any era.

Legalize online gambling is what diceman meant

I think the current online gambling situation is the same as the alcohol prohibition ban in the 1920's. Eventually the various governments will realise that it cannot eliminate online gambling, and its better and more beneficial to legalize it. Bans generally never work, they only force the issue to go underground.

I totally agree with Michael1981. Here in Cyprus is illegal to play online or off line. This gambling prohibition opens doors to black market underground gambling where player aren’t protected, the government doesn’t get a penny and it’s run by gangsters like Al Capone.

The best thing is to legalize online/off line gambling and part of the profits that the government generates from it could be use to help players that have an addiction problem and control the casinos activities. We can’t deny human nature; we will do what makes us feel good even if it’s bad for us.

I think you are right on target. Bans don't work. One comes to mind happening now. A special interest group is trying to ban ben and jerry's schwetty balls ice cream. It only caused more support for it. I don't think it's about the ice cream anymore. It's about being controlled like that. People rebel.

When bans start becoming law is when the folly becomes clear and the inevitable meltdown happens.

The ban on online gambling in USA was made because of one reason... big percentage of USA online gamblers just went into European casinos and started to send money out of USA in big amounts... they had to stop it as anyone would... if it just continued there would be a bigger mess.

I think they will legalize it back once they have a good online gambling industry prepared so that they can keep the national money within borders, which is reasonable I think!

So the conclusion is: USA can never compete with Europe's tradition
