    Default QLF Floods

This is not really a "fun diversion" but thought I'd post this for those unaware of the flooding in QLD.

I had no idea how bad it was until I saw this - the video was made yesterday.

OMG! This is unbelievable. I hope these floodings will stop soon and people will be safe.

I'm going to Australia next month, had planned to go visit the Great Reef Barrier after spending some weeks in Melbourne and a road trip on the Great Ocean Road. I think I'm better off staying in VIC and then going to Alice Springs instead of heading to Cairns.

I posted a thread on PAL about this.

There are currently 13 dead and more to come. The airport has been closed, the CBD evacuated. 30 suburbs on high alert.

I'm in the city affected, but one of the lucky ones.

King tide is expected to hit 3pm local time tomorrow (23 hours from this post) and the water levels expected to rise 2.5 metres from today.

In 48 hours the flood is expected to exceed levels experienced in 1974.

Be careful mate! I didn't realise you were back in Oz.

I'll be thinking of you at 4 tomorrow.

Phil you should still go there.. By the time you come chances are the rain will have stopped and it will be sunny again. Although I'm not sure the rain would have done anything good for the barrier reef.

I'm going to the gold coast sometime in March and considered canceling my trip but the truth is that the state could really use our tourist money at the moment too, so we are still going.

Great Ocean Road is also closed at the moment so it's hitting a few places around the country.

I'm going to south east Queensland (Gold Coast and/or Sunshine Coast) for a few months late next week. I can certainly pick the times...

I heard about these floods over the radio yesterday morning.

And here I was complaining about the rain we were getting over here

I hope there will be an end to this devastation soon and and no more dead.

Add parts of Tasmania to the list as well. A few suburbs in Launceston are on warning and a couple of popular holiday spots on the east coast have been cut off because the roads are not safe.

In addition to the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, there are parts in the north and east that have copped it in the last couple of days and more damage.

To try and put the Queensland part into perspective for people, it is 25% of Australia's size, being 1.72 million square kilometres. That's four times the size of Japan, six times the size of the UK and twice the size of Texas. Three quarters of Queensland has now been declared a disaster zone according to an article I read today. The Brisbane area is located in the south east corner.

    Cleanup has begun.

People all over Brisbane spent all weekend helping total strangers as bets they could.

My brother had something on his facebook status last week saying how our country donated billions to other countries when they had natural disasters like this, then only donated something like a mill to the brisbane floods appeal.

Anyone know how true that is?
I've donated as much cash as I could already. Every dollar counts.

I have to say hearing the people on the radio talking about the devastation of the floods, all the mud and dirt that is everywhere, almost brings me to tears. I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like to return to your home where everything you've ever owned has been ruined.

Apparently the rain stopped a few days ago and it's hot as hell now.. which is good because it means it will evaporate quickly hopefully..

That's good news. But I guess the cleanup will take a while though.

Just watched the video now and I must say it was truly shocking to see how fast the water was rising. And those pictures ar just unbelivable. Truly shows what incredible and scary powers mother nature beholds.

Canadian news has been covering this story every day ,been a tough couple weeks for that area.Just pray everyone stays safe .My friend's mom is leaving in 5 days for a month long trip to Australia , she booked it 6 months ago and did not realise what she was looking forward to. I was watching the news about the Haiti relief fund a year later and amazing how very little cash has gotten in the hands of local people*where is the money ,who knows!*.If you can recommend a good local charity ,we are happy to make a donation Renee.
